An E-mail I sent to the "comments" section for the website of my Local Movie Cinema:
I was Disappointed to see that Angels and Demons (which debut Friday) was not being shown at my local Republic Theatre, why is this? I've enjoyed reading Dan Browns books, Tom Hanks is a great Actor, Ron Howard a Great Director. according to Entertainment weekly the movie grossed 16.6 Million beating both Star Trek and the X men movie over the weekend. I feel you are doing a great disservice to your theatre by not showing this movie, you are losing revenue. and are making customers unhappy, I am not the only one un happy about the local Republic Theatre not showing this film, and even more un happy knowing that we have to drive 25-30 mins away to another theatre that is showing this film. does Republic Theatres expect to show Angels and Demons at all in it's theatres? I hope so, because if not I fear your company will lose a lot of business at least from the local community, as we will go to other movie cinema's who will show the films we wish to see. and it will probably hurt your business nationally. I hope this is just a gross oversite on the part of the management of republic theatres and you hope to show this acclaimed film in your establishment. I hope the decision to not show the film is not born out of the clamoring of a few "fringe" religious groups who does not like Dan brown's style of fiction book writing. after all your theatre showed the Da vinci Code and probably raked in tons of cash for it. do not let certain groups uneducated clamoring get in the way of good business sense. and please start showing Angels and Demons in your establishment soon. I'd hate to travel 25 mins away from here on out and give my cinema viewing time and money to the Wheelersburg Cinema. Thank you for your time Sincerely, Paul R.
Ewan McGregor: 'Nothing Anti-Catholic' About 'Angels & Demons'
"McGregor portrays Camerlengo Patrick McKenna in "Angels & Demons," adapted from Dan Brown's bestselling novel. Camerlengo is Italian for chamberlain, and in the Roman Catholic Church, he is one of the Pope's advisors. Though "Angels & Demons" was written as a prequel to "The Da Vinci Code," this movie presents it as a sequel. As Camerlengo, McGregor's character, Patrick McKenna, runs the Vatican in the interim after the Pope's mysterious death before the Cardinals elect a new pope. McGregor defends the film, saying, "It's a very old school, fast-paced thriller with bombs ticking in the background and set in the world of the Vatican. There is nothing anti-Catholic nor anti-Christian about it." McGregor insists that, at the heart of the film, the conflict is mainly between science and religion. The parties within the Catholic faith who are represented as evildoers are found out and punished by the cardinals and thus, McGregor insists, the Catholic Church as a whole is not tarnished."

Ultimately, for some movie goers, Brown’s film won’t be a manifesto on science and God, it’ll just be a story. “If this causes your faith to be challenged, you need to re-evaluate yourself,” Heather Simpson, a Catholic who watched the film. “It’s a movie.”

Seriously, Dan Brown is a FICTION Writer, who tosses in a little tid bit of history in his works to make it seem somewhat like his fiction writing could be some sort of alternate account of events that deviates from the "authorized" version, it is nothing more than a style to grab attention and generate headlines. Religious groups upset still over the Da Vinci Code, we're up in arms before this movie ever started filming, they didn't give it a chance, that is sad in my opinion, if you read Dan Browns Works he wrote "Angels And Demons" BEFORE "Da Vinci Code" and in Angels and Demons he HELPS the Catholic church by battling and sniffing out those who seek to have a vendetta against the holy church. It's a fast paced thriller that just happens to be set with the background of religion, its to grab attention and to make money. but at the end of the day all it is - is FICTION. I can't believe anyone would actually want to "boycott" a film, I'm looking at you Catholic League -Obviously you should take Heather Simpsons advice as it was quoted from the Source. and I'm angry that my local theatre has chosen so far not to show the film, for whatever reason. I can't believe they might let a few fringe religious groups who are uneducated about the book and the film who wish to boycott it simply because it's based off of work by Dan brown and is being booked as a sequel to the Da Vinci Code (even though in reality Angels and Demons came first in order of the books being written)

It's still a lot of money but it's still cheaper than a night out with live theater. Hollywood still competes.
such as the Batman Dark Knight Movie, Pirate of the Caribbean, all of that.
They even Showed "The Da Vinci Code" when it came out in 06' so why not Angels and Demons?
is this a widely held opinion in the catholic community? is it no big deal? is the "catholic League" making hoopla over nothing? or does the Catholic league really represent your interests as a Catholic?
and Rhetta, I agree, if you get worked up over a work of fiction centered around a religious institution, if you let it bother you that much, obviously you are insecure in your beliefs and faith and need to re-evaluate.
