Most of us know about the Craigslist murders.
A man who answered two women's ads for erotic services on Craigslist killed them.
The Internet is a breeding ground for erotic services.
There is so much of it out there.
The result is a lot of victims.
From scams to STD to death, the list is a grim one.
Not all erotic service ads result in something bad happening.
I tend to think that only a very small percent of them turn out bad or we would hear
more about them.
But, is it a matter of time before it gets worse?
Should more research be done on erotic service ads?
Or ...
Should they be banned from the Internet now?

Explicitly offering "sex" services is already illegal
in most countries. Places that do have legalized
prostitution, such as Nevada, Germany, Holland,
New Zealand, parts of Australia, have strict
regulations about how services can be advertised
along with a lot of other rules for conducting their
business. Beyond that, what are you wanting to
ban? Escorts? Titty Bars? Any and all massage
services, including those by CMT and RMT? What
about "dating" or 'friend finder" services? Maybe
gather should be banned. It is full of stalkers, and
there are some people who use it to hook up.
All of these ads are different than personal ads. Anyone answering a personal ad on the Internet has to be aware that there could be some danger to it. No matter what we try to do, there will be predators and there will be prey. We have to advise/counsel/teach our children and friends about the dangers of answering personal ads, particularly when they involve meeting strangers.
There is a much better way as described in Invisible Hand here on Gather an at

We can have freedom and responsibility, too. They are not incompatible.
"Someone should stop all wars." Yep.
"Someone should ban erotic ads from Craigslist." Sure.
"Someone should feed the starving people in Africa." Yes indeed.
Again, totally a moot point.
Yes, the reason that women advertise erotic services on Craigslist is because they are in fact desperate for money. What, did you thing women became prostitutes to fulfill a childhood dream? As a kinky hobby? As a 'business opportunity?'
They know darn well that they're jeopardizing their life and health. It's not that they're less enlightened than you. They simply have no other options.
Yes, there are exceptions - but in most cases, prostitution is absolutely a career choice of last resort.
Most important, it's physically impossible because of the interconnecteness of the Internet. Right now, my personal domain is registered in Australia. I'm now using one server in Canada, but I've used servers physically located in Khabarovsk, Russia before. Any information available on one server, is available anywhere in the world.
Because of the network of Domain Name Servers, anything can be found anywhere. Trying to outlaw anything on the Internet would be less effective than the "war on drugs" or the "war on terror". It simply can't be done.
I agree with Pat - the problem is human nature. HOWEVER, I do feel that there should be better limitations/restrictions on what is placed on the internet. I have NO desire to see these ads and yet I am inadvertently exposed to them all the time. Simply going through emails and go to "next" and find pics I have no desire to see....it shouldn't happen - no link or anything, just opens up pics. UGH. I hate that.
