Father Hugo Rose

Isn't this beautiful! It's a Father Hugo rose - very fragrant, single yellow bush rose with tiny green leaves and many sharp thorns on red stems. It only blooms for about 2 weeks in mid May. The deer don't like the thorns, so it isn't browsed. I love this plant.

 

For years I searched for a Father Hugo rose. Finally 3 years ago a friend gave me 2! He found them in a small Midwest nursery and had them shipped to me. I planted both. The country house one is now 6-7 feet tall and in full bloom. The city house one is 2 ft tall with no blooms. Can you guess which one the gardener fed every day?

These are beautiful! I don't think I've seen this variety before - where the buds open to a flatter flower and only bloom for 2 weeks. It reminds me of some of the other flowering bushes that only blossom in spring. We have to enjoy them while we can because its such a short time.
I've never heard of this before, but it's gorgeous! It's a shame that it doesn't bloom longer, or I'd have one of my own.

Beauty is so fleeting. I knew this rose was fantastic, but, like lilacs, it only blooms in a fragrant rush of beauty for just a few weeks in Spring. It is like "a day in June" so rare, so memorable and so brief. I wouldn't give up beauty because it would pass. That is the nature of beauty.

I love these old single-petal roses. They are so elegant! I'd keep it even if it did bloom only 2 weeks/year!

Oh my. Those are a beautiful yellow color. I would love to plant some rose bushes here, but I think all the animals (we are in a rural area) would ruin them.

Thanks all - I wish you could smell it, too! The best thing is that the resident dear herd don't eat it - waay too thorny for them! The first one I planted was next to a ragusa rose patch that choked it out over a five or ten year period. That was 100s of yards from the house on the edge of the woods - the deer didn't bother any of them - too thorny! When I found a replacement years later I put it in a place I could better maintain (weed & feed) and still no deer damage.

Richard can you start plants from clippings - let me know where I can order one of these - they're gorgeous...you're right about fleeting beauty and as long as they bloom on my b-day that would make me happy!  Salud
