Question: Metal Detectors...

I was at the beach and saw several people walknig around with metal detectors and headphones on... So I pondered the question... Do they ever find anything?

Do you know anyone who has one?

Do they ever find anything... valuable?

My uncle and my father both have them. They've both found a lot of coins. My father has found some Civil War-era relics, and my uncle has found at least one ring.

Adding to my last comment: the things my father and uncle have found haven't necessarily been on beaches, but a lot of the coins have.

All around the world, long-buried antiquities are turning up as modern farm machinery plows ever deeper into the soil. At the same time, more sophisticated detectors can pinpoint coins, swords, necklaces, knives and other relics hidden deeper underground.

we have one that has detected copper piping underground. lol We've also found poptops from coke cans, tin foil, an old watch, but no worthy treasures. I suppose it depends on where you search. When the lake levels around here are down you can find all kinds of things that boaters have lost. I don't think you'll get rich with it, but that shouldn't keep you from trying and having fun with it. Who knows? You might find a buried treasure that old Lady Whitfield buried years ago. :-p

I just don't have the right outfit to use one. Have you ever noticed, they usually wear similar clothes? LOL

I have never had one or known anyone that did. I used to see people using them a lot when I lived in Southern CA, but I have yet to see anyone use one at the beaches here on the central coast.

LOL Gwen... I think you do need special attire. I saw a couple this week on the beach here in San Diego but have never seen anyone anywhere else using them.

Many years ago when these things were becoming popular, my husband bought one for $400 dollars. It had a big battery on the handle that needed to be replaced often. He loved going out into the pasture of the old farm and exploring with it. He discovered a lot of tin cans, a nice buggy spring some horseshoe nails and I think that's about all he ever found. But he enjoyed doing it. Maybe he had dreams of finding a buried treasure, he never said. I think it was his alone time with a purpose. He's been gone about 25 years now and I haven't thought about this since I read your article. Thanks for the memories.
