I was looking up kid friendly facts about Mackinac that I could use to make up some papers for the kids to do, and came across some fun sites with kids pages on them.
One is from the Mackinac Bridge. It has a word search, a multiple answer quiz, a story (which is great for Gilly's age, and I was able to come up with 3 questions she can answer about it, too), and a Mackinac Bridge coloring page.
The next is Mackinac for Kids. It has online quizzes (which I typed up), some interesting facts, homework help, and more!
I came up with a fact sheet for Chris & Gilly to do, a harder one for Raegan, a word search for all 3, multiple question quiz for Chris & Rae, a story with a quiz for Gilly, a coloring page for all 3 kids, a sheet about Mackinac/Mackinaw for each of them, and a daily review sheet for each day we do something.
That sheet just has 4 questions:
Where did we go today?
What was your favorite place to visit today?
What was your favorite thing to do today?
Name one thing you learned today
That sheet is more for them to help remember later what they did each day, and what they enjoyed about the day, for when they do their scrapbooks.
I also found some clip art to use on the print-outs of a suspension bridge, a colonial soldier, and some Michigan related things.
I know that they won't love the idea, but I want them to take something away from the trip besides just fun memories. I don't plan to make them work on "homework" all day. I'll carry it with me, and when we sit down to eat, or relax, I'll let them each answer a few things or do something. I am going to use a folder to keep them all together.
Now, I just need ink for my printer... My mom actually gave us a printer last weekend, but we haven't hooked it up yet. Maybe I'll do that and test it out. In theory, it's also a scanner.

I think the kids will get a lot more out of the vacation if they are remembering what they learn. I went so many places when I was little, but couldn't tell you facts or anything about them. Writing them down and thinking about them will help them remember what they're learning.
So many of the places we're going are already learning places, and they'll teach you a lot about the place if you listen.
I figure for the zoo and the aquarium this summer, I'll find age appropriate books to read before we go, and maybe find simple coloring sheets or something...
