On the main level of the museum, there is a rebuilt working carousel from 1928. The carousel is in a small windowed room overlooking the Grand River, and it does cost $1 to ride. We opted not to ride, and the man running it was kind enough to open the rope to let us take photos of the whole thing.
It's lovely- a child's fantasy! It is showing some wear and tear, and I noted that 1 set of animals or a bench was missing. I'm hoping they are just being sanded down and repainted, as that's what the most wear and tear I saw was from- chipped paint.
This was actually our last stop in our museum tour, but it is on the first floor, just across from the Old Streets of Grand Rapids exhibit. I've ridden it once or twice, but usually only because I have the kids with me.
