Saturday, I visited the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, which sits on the banks of the Mississippi River, South of St. Louis.

The first burial here is believed to have been in 1827.
Soldiers from all US Wars are here.



Including 3,255 Unknowns.


Civil War casualties often list only the date of death on the tombstone.

There are 1,140 Confederate Soldiers buried here.



And 556 “not of military service.”

According to the Department of Veteran Affairs website, the cemetery contains over 172,000 internments, over 331 acres.

At Schofield, the Cub Scouts who put the flags down for Memorial Day and volunteers at Andersonville don't decorate those graves with US flags.
