In the early 20s, Joan got her start as a hootchie kootchie dancer. They were dime a dozen, and disposable. One didn't make enough money to live on by doing the dancing, so dinner and a date after the show with a Stage Door Johnny helped tide things over.
Joan was determined to go a lot farther. She used all her skills to advance herself. She once said, "Don't knock the casting couch. It's better then the cold hard floor."
This is the messiest I've ever seen her hair. When you're young and a bit nude, you can get away with that.

A nice set of ta-tas distracts from a bad hair day.
in the 1920's I would guess by the hair, I have pics of my mother with a similar do when she was about 16!
Gutter Girl! Yeah!
I always thought Lucille LaSuer was a prettier name... oh well...
Additionally, somewhere around this time it was rumored that she had had her eyes surgically slit open to make them appear larger. In this photo, you can barely see that she has tiny pencil-thin eyebrows drawn on as opposed to the giant caterpillars she wore over her eyes most of her career.
Its a great shot, Peter. Thanks for sharing it with us.
(Who's Joan Crawford? Is she kidding?)
