In 1964 Joan Blondell was to do Straight-Jacket. But she was one of those drunks who always had accidents (they say she even fell out of a moving car, driving drunk, once). Before filming, she walked through a glass wall and was injured (some say she went through a glass table). So her good friend Joan Crawford agreed to take over the part, promising to hush hush what had happened, so Blondell could stay insurable for possible future movies. Rumors spread that Crawford STOLE the part (probably spread by Bette Davis), and Joan didn't say a word to defend herself. Joan Crawford had a lot of extremes in her personality, and was fiercely loyal in her life long friendships, too.
Straight-Jacket is a fun fun fun movie to watch - especially with popcorn. It's better than when it came out, since seeing all those old cars drive around like that is now so cool. Joan gave it her all, and then some more, and unleashed a fierce performance, and showed all of her many sides. It's a shame they only give Academy Awards for the A films, since hers was the best performance of the year by far.
And ... Christina stole some creepy ideas from this script for her own work of fiction Mommy Dearest.
