I keep a list of potential ferret names on the filing cabinet next to my computer. This is for ferrets who come into the shelter either nameless (found on the street or unnamed by owner) or named something I wouldn't say in polite society. (Reefer, Snotnose, Booger, A$$hole, Retard, are a few I nixed.)

This is Jillybean, a cute little chocolate female who passed through the shelter. She's since been adopted and the new owner liked her name well enough to keep it. Not everyone keeps the names the ferrets have in the shelter. Sometimes it's just too hard for them to remember, sometimes they can't pronounce it and sometimes they just like to make the ferret feel like one of the family by having the family name it. Below are some of the names I've come up with myself, gotten from various websites, or stolen from someone else. The names with an asterisk (*) are either original or turned out to be prophetic regarding the ferret's personality.
Sorry for the incredibly long list ... I couldn't figure out how to make it into a table. Anyone have any other good ones?

Funny, but I can get my critter to come to the bell, Barbara, but never to his name.
any tricks to that?
Penni: First, use your ferret's name a lot. Second, find a treat he really likes that is easy to dispense a tiny bit at a time (like Ferretone). Say his name and give him the treat. Do this 5 times. Let him play. After about 15 minutes do it again. Let him play. After 15 minutes, do it again. let him play. Then say his name. If he looks at you, give him the treat. Do that 3 times and let him play. In 15 minutes do it again. Shortly, he should start running over when you say his name. Then change the treat and do it. Then only treat on the 1st and 3rd time. Do that 5 times (in sets of 3). Then treat on the 2nd time, repeat sequence. It should only take one afternoon or evening to teach him his name. Then treat randomly when he responds to his name. Over-treat (give him lots and lots) if he comes out from under something to get the treat. (that would end the session)
ha ha
Kim: I thought Meringue-atang was just a bit out of the realm of normal, but I'll add it.
Goes to Show (Ferret Goes to Show...)
I'm gonna work on this but gotta go - lightening! Yikes!
You've got a great list of names; what about "Bandit" for a mask-faced one like Jillybean?
Wilhelmine, I think dogs and cats are easier as one gets older. Not nearly so much crawling around on the floor reaching under furniture :)
Wait (Ferret)
The worst one I know is a friend who took a dignified ferret and named it Mrs Wiggles. I reminded him that in nature the ferret is a killer, much to be feared.
The ferret in Sluggy Freelance is named Kiki.
I used to wait until something just came to me, or one of our Foster kids needed "the next one" named after them, which led to a female named Justin, and another female named Jimmy, but oh, Barb, it meant so much to them.
If they already had a name, I left it, but most didn't. They were drop-offs.
Dave is leaving his dog's name Carolina, but I doubt that's what he'd have chosen, personally, I like it and since we consider her our grand-daughter-dog as it's as close as it's going to get, we're pretty happy :) And he loves her so much.
I like your list, no more weasels here though LOL four is enough chaos
Shannon: So ... are ya gonna share or keep them all for yourself? :)
Jean: Gizmo is such a good name for a ferret. Sigmond? So when he got away from you, you could say it was a Freudian slip?
Do you remember Paddington Bear? In his intro song on TV he comes from a bad place and is adopted by the nice family, and to describe him they say, "He's curious and speaks his mind but (or and) trouble's never far behind..." He is constantly trying to be helpful but is very clumsy and is always getting into trouble. Paddington would be a good name.
I watch too many cartoons on tv!
Anywho, it's name: Chug Chug
So you're telling me your friend was a trouble maker? :)
And of course there was the day Mike slipped chug chug in the girlsroom at lunch. Riotous!
I think COLUMBUS is a good name for a ferret because they like to explore and so did Columbus.
Hee hee. Good suggestion, Granma. :)
Lotta cute names there! Ours are named Pim (after a child on a kids show)
and Dwight after the Character on the "office"...
Thanks, Treasa :)
dont know if these have been said but, Giggles, Gaget,Widget, Mr. Wiggles, Pan
Thanks, Angela.
someone, sometimes - what's the difference?
Huh? What is this in reference to? Are you trying to make me more nuts than I already am? LOL!
A friend left this note on an article of mine:
Ummm...complement/compliment...
I'd love to have the chance to compliment the chef on how well the sauce complements the fish and vegetables!
and I immediately searched my article for where I might have used one instead of the other.
Um ... okay, but ... ?? What did this have to do with the article on ferret names? [I'm so confused!] So ... in your comment here from 2:44pm, were you really asking what the difference was between the word "someone" and the word "sometimes"? (insert quizzical, confused expression)
I had a cat once named "Killer", I think it would make a good ferret name. The owner could post a sign outside their door saying "Beware of Killer Ferret"....I did with my cat. LOL
Heh. I'm not sure, considering the reputation ferrets have as baby killers, that anyone would want to name their ferret "Killer", but I'll add it. I just got a ferret in (someone let it loose out of the car!) and we named it Jax.
OH wow, I did not know that ferrets have a baby killing reputation, please strike my silly name suggestion form the list.
Hey, I'm sure someone has named their ferret Killer. :)
insert - have you read your article looking for those words?
I constantly reread my articles - even after they are published.
In the critiques welcomed dept - read!
Okay, NOW I understand! LOL! I didn't know what on earth you were talking about! If you'd given me a hint (like: wrong word in article) or something I might have figured it out sooner. :) I read that stupid thing so many times that I just couldn't see it. I fixed it, and thanks for letting me know! [In fact, I so could not see it that I had to do a search for the word "someone" and read the silly sentence twice before it hit me.]
Again, thanks and sorry to be obtuse.
Sometimes it helps to read each line backwards.
When pointing out corrections needed it is nicer to be a bit vague - it doesn't look so much like a critique then.
BTW - this was your hint:
A friend left this note on an article of mine:
Ummm...complement/compliment...
I'd love to have the chance to compliment the chef on how well the sauce complements the fish and vegetables!
and I immediately searched my article for where I might have used one instead of the other.
Well, thank you for helping keep my articles error free. I'm a more direct sort of person. "Yo! You used the wrong word!" is fine by me. I don't mind direct critique. :)
Reading each line backwards sounds like it will make my brain hurt. A lot. I suspect a lot of my issues are due to the "old eyes" thing. I swear the font keeps getting smaller and smaller! I will try to be more perceptive to your gentle hints in the future.
Okay, I had a dog one time named "Chatterbox", maybe that's a good name for a ferret. How about "Chat" or Chatter"?
I also had a dog one time that was born without a tail, LOL, we named him "Bobby", if you get one without a tail name him "Bobby".
That's a cute name, but I think I have a cool derivative: Chitterbox. It's a pun on 'chatterbox' and one of the noises a ferret makes is called a "chitter".
Gee, I thought "Bob" was the name of a boneless man in the swimming pool. (Horrible series of stupid jokes...what do you call the boneless man in the meat department? Chuck.)
Good for you Barb. What a great thing you are doing. And these names, wow!
It's funny how this post has turned into one of those that just keeping getting more added to it. It's a great resource for when I get unnamed ferrets in, though. :)
Oh wow. Can I use some of those names in my stories?
You have ferrets in your stories? :) Sure, feel free.
Not ferrets, but a need and a lack of inspiration for interesting names of people and their pets.
Feel free! If you find any good ferret names anywhere else (think long and slinky) let me know :)
Now why in the world would you not want to continue calling a ferret Reefer, Snotnose, Booger, A$$hole or Retard?
LOL
This is a GREAT list!
Hee hee. Yeah, if I can't say it in front of old people or children without blushing, the name goes. :)
wow, you have quite the list there
I couldn't think of any others, maybe "LUCKY" as they are pretty daggone lucky to find someone like you to take care of them
Heh, thanks, Barb.
wow that is quite a list of names Barb! they are all adorable
Thanks. I'm actually using this as a resource for names when ferrets come in without a name.
Have you read "Pocketful of Names"? It's a lovely novel set off the coast of Maine. You remind me of one of the characters that makes a brief appearance towards the latter part of the book.
LOL! No, I haven't read it. I hope you liked the character, or at least the character was colorful and not too terribly insane. :)
The character you rimind me of is vividly colorful and answers the question of the book's title.
Heh. Thanks :)
how 'bout penny lane?
That's cute :)
Already have Wolfgang, and I'm not including Boogerino! LOL! That's the kind of name we change. I cannot say that name with a straight face! Ha ha ha. I have to be able to talk to people without snickering. :)
How about ....Korak
Thanks for looking at my post.
