Growing up in the the 70's did nothing for me. For the most part I stayed outside from dawn till dusk. In the 80's playing outside had little appeal for me unless it was to skip school, so I spent a great deal of time in the afternoons crashed out on the couch watching TV. I can remember watching The Little Rascals and The Three Stooges. Then sometime in the 80s, someone got the idea to briefly revive the old 60s soap opera Dark Shadows. In the beginning I watched it so I would have something twith which to get in to discussions with the girls, but the more I watched the more I began to develop an infatuation with Vampires. As demand for the show died my interest did not.
In the 1984, Miami Vice came out inspiring kids to wear sport jackets, t-shirts, and tennis shoes without socks. I can even remembering an occasional episode of American Bandstand, before MTV came along and even a few afterward. I can remember a friends little brother having a massive crush on Alyssa Milano's character Samantha on Who's the Boss. Johnny Depp was Officer Tom Hanson on 21 Jump Street. Alex P. Keaton, played by Michael J. Fox on Family Ties would propel him to stardom. 1989 would give us Quantum Leap.
Dont even get me started on Saturday Morning cartoons which if anything got better in the 80's. In the 80's writers for movies, tv, and music had imagination. They wanted something that would last in peoples memories for longer than a season, or a year or two in the music business. Today, People are still singing along (quietly..lol) to Come On Eileen by Dexy's Midnight Runners. We still tune in when we can find the old re-runs of the old 80s TV shows.
Todays Entertainment just doesnt compare. At least at the moment. What do you Remember?
