Which Song Version Is Better (Number 68)

Never heard of this song. I would have to go with Johnny Cash after listening to all the versions.

Well, you're right Chris...this one was hard to choose. Like you said, I remember Arlo Guthrie's version the best. I think I've probably heard John Denver's version before. I didn't know that it was written by Steve Goodman nor had I heard his version and I've never heard the Johhny Cash version. After listening to all I guess I would have to go with Arlo's version though I think John Denver has the best vocals on the song and I really did like his version. As usual, thanks for educating me on all of the versions.

Jen I do like John Denver's version a lot too. Just to let you know there is another version of the song done by Judy Collins but I could not find a good recording of it. David Hasselhoff also does a version and believe it or not its not bad.

Though I like the music, I don't care for the vocals, so Willies Nelson gets 4th.
I'll give third to the original by Steve Goodman.
The most well-known version by Arlo Guthrie takes second.

You might be interested in my 800-page biography, "Steve Goodman: Facing the Music." The book delves deeply into the genesis and effects of "City of New Orleans," and Arlo Guthrie, who first made the song a hit, is a key source among my 1,050 interviewees and even contributed the foreword.
