When I was a little girl, my brothers and sisters and I would pool our money together every Mother's Day and buy my mother a corsage made of orchids.

My mother, and both of my grandmas, grew roses, carnations, and baby’s breath in their gardens, so a corsage of any of those flowers wasn’t especially particularly “special”.

But an exotic orchid, a flower that was not native to cold Minnesota, was regarded as the best of the best.

Orchids were the crème de la crème.

Orchids were not only rare in our neck of the woods, they were lovely, delicate, fragile, and revered.

Orchids were always the most expensive flower in the case....

Not that money mattered... we made plenty of homemade gifts for my Mom, too.

We picked a lot of pansies, violets, bluebells... even dandelions for my mom, too. All free.

And she smiled just as big when we brought her weeds as she did when we brought her her gift on Mother's Day!

But that once a year tradition of buying a corsage made of orchids for our mother was like saying that our Mom was the best.

An orchid corsage meant that our mom deserved the most wonderful, most beautiful, most special flower ever.

We won’t be looking for photos of orchids this week at Rainbow Connections, we’ll be looking for the color orchid – a delicate shade of pinkish lavender that can be glimpsed all around - especially this time of year.

This week at Rainbow Connection ~ Colorful Competitions, I’d like to invite you to remember your mom with photos, poetry, videos, posts, paintings and other creative expressions pertaining to the color Orchid.

I hope you’ll join the fun…
