What's wrong with my internet?

I'm not a very computer savy person and when something doesn't work the way it's supposed to I'm as lost as a goose.  LOL

I got home about 6:00 tonight and when I turned on my laptop and tried to log onto the internet it wouldn't let me.  It took me from 6:30 until 8:00 before I finally got on.  It let me on a couple of times during this time, but when I would try to pull up my email or Gather, it would just freeze, it wouldn't do anything, it just stared at me.  It was creepy.  I turned my laptop off and then back on a couple of times to re-boot, but that didn't help any.  I finally just left it alone for about 10 minutes and when I came back it worked just like nothing had ever happened and it looked at me as if to say, "what's wrong with you." LOL

This is the first time I've ever had trouble logging onto the internet.  Anybody have any ideas what causes this?  It was frustrating.  Maybe it has the swine flu, that's a virus isn't it.  LOL

YOu could have a virus. You could have a slow server (the place that you get your internet from)

Our service is through Comcast cable. And sometimes we lose connection even though it doesn't look like we do. I think that the signal gets a bit bogged down. When this happens I just leave it alone for a little while and it usually comes back in an hour or so. Some time it depends on the time of day and what is happening on the world wide web. Mostly likely your provider had a short problem for a while. It happens sometimes.

Mine did that and it turned out to be my router suddenly wouldn't talk to my computer due to a windows update.

I agree. I do think that it was your internet service provider.

If you're on cable, it will get slower the more people there are on the internet that use that cable company. During peak times, it will slow your internet down significantly. But, it could have been a server problem. I would be aware if this happens again and report it to your internet server/cable company.

Yes, I agree with most here. It just happens with windows and IE from time to time, no rhyme nor reason, kinda just like the Gather glitches. Frustrating as all get out, but what can we do?

So many things it *could* be. When that happens at my house, it is usually Comcast being freaky and glitchy.

This has happened to me alot. Just unplug your router for 10 seconds. Then it should work. Good luck.

Well, I'm on again tonight. Woo Hoo. It went out again last night about 10:00 p.m. and I never could get back on. I put in a call to my internet provider, and I haven't heard from them yet. I tried some of the suggestions and separated my router and wireless thingy, and I unpluged my router for a few seconds. I'm on again, I hope forever....Woo Hoo. Thanks for all the advise, I actually read all the comments and everyone knows more than I do. Thanks you all very much.

I hope your ISP has been behaving itself since then! That happens with ISP's once in awhile. It can be due to almost anything, probably an upgrade that they didn't tell you about.
