Piggy banks are always cool. Baby books (the ones you write achievements in), photo books, clothes (onsies came in handy), wipes, gift sets (the travel kind for 2.00 something at Walmart are very small bottles and fit great in diaper bags!), diapers, and primary color things for organization.

I never had a baby shower for neither girl, no one would host one for me, so the father or I bought what they needed. The father isn't in their lives anymore, so I'm a single mom and buy everything they need. ;)

PS. (I don't know how the hospital is where you live, but our hospital requires a head support to release from the hospital and they go on the car seat and can come in handy to support the head up. Both of my babies were preemies and C-sections by 1 month, but was fine on birth weight and was breathing on their own.

BIBS! OMG!!! I go thru those STILL fast! Bibs are so handy (not a must have, but very helpful), I never had enough, especially because my oldest had severe acid reflux and wouldn't STOP spitting up... uuugh.... also, blankets and receiving blankets- you can never get enough of those.

Shoes, I never really used shoes on my kids, even though, I received a ton in bulk from my mom from yard sales.. LOL! I was the only parent not using shoes; however, socks would get lost in laundry and these are definitely a NEED !!

I always make a special gift. It begins with a laundry basket (you can always use another of those), with ribbons for whatever color goes with the baby she's having (or yellow if they don't know) woven through the holes. Inside, there are cards:

One with a rubber band attached, reminding the new mom that she has to learn to really flexible about EVERYTHING.

One with a paper clip attached, reminding her that even if she never has been before, she has to learn to be organized.

One with a thread attached...reminding her that Moms are usually the ones who hold the family together.

One with praying hands...and the reminder to pray.

One attached so some diapers...since CHANGING will be quite important with the little one in the household. :)

You get the idea. I usually have about 20 things in the basket. I always include a picture book, since reading to kids is so importand. And I usually try to include some classical music, again so the baby is exposed to it early on. A mother's topic Bible or a women's Bible. A favorite recipe. A couple of coupons for watching the baby...since it's so important that Mom and Dad have a date night now and then.

The gift is always a hit, and everyone wants a copy of what was on the cards.

I had a couple of showers that friends had for me.....my very favorite was a personalized gift basket....it was gorgeous! Got a lovely basket, and it was filled full of all sorts of goodies.......small containers of baby powder, shampoo, wipes, darling bottles, even some onesies! It was so neat because it was personalized, just for me. I also really love the little one-piece sleepers.....they're great!

My Boppy!!!! OMG - It was a lifesaver and I used it everyday for over 2 years! It's an essential for a nursing mom. My son self-weaned at 25 months. The boppy was by far the best gift I received. Next to that I would say wipes - you can NEVER have enough wipes. I still buy them and my son is 4 years old. Great face wipers! lol.... Good luck to her - wish them the best!

I never had a baby shower with either of my kids....we just lived too far away from family and friends....

The one thing my husband loved was the Diaper genie.

Blankets! Socks, bottles (even for when they stope nursing).
I hope she is doing well in the hospital - poor girl being in there for so long like that!

OMG, I totally forgot about my Boppy, Amy! I got one with my first, used it with my 2nd as well and passed it along to my sister. That thing was AMAZING!

My kids are 8 and 5 and we have a tub of wipes on the bathroom counter, ALWAYS! Like you said, they are great for washing messy faces!

my favorite gift to give is a gift for mom a sexy nity because after being big for nine months you sure dont feel very pretty so dont forget to get her something to make her feel special and loved just not for the baby

Did you like the diaper genie? I had one with Chandler and after using it for about a month I got irritated. It seemed to be more trouble than it was worth and rather stinky too!

She's hanging in there! She knows that the only way to have this baby is to stay there - so that's what keeps her going! Her mom comes every Monday and spends the night, leaves late Tuesday afternoon. Her hubby arrives on Thursday and stays through Sunday.

I'll keep her in my prayers, The big thing I liked was the diapers, my church family have bought for my 6 pregancies, and baby wipes, and onesies. Then I also loved the stuff my step mother made for 5 of mine out of the 6 was the crocheted dresses for 4 of my girls and sweaters, and blankets for my son he was born in nov. and 1 daughter in feb, the others was spring and 1 in summer. They was always made with a lot of love.

I ALWAYS get a gift for the mom! It's usually a candle and a Bath & Body set.

that's exciting . . . unfortunately, i've yet to go to a baby shower (soon though!) so i'm not much help. i would probably make a pretty little basket full of essentials that the new mom might need: bottles, diapers, formula, teethers, etc.

My favorites were home made gifts, one of my husbands aunts made each of my kids a blanket and they still use them. I also liked the essentials. I recently went to a baby shower and as a gift my friend & I went in on the car seat and then we filled it with bottles, bottle brushes, pacifiers, bibs, rattles, etc. It was a bit expensive but it looked amazing and it was all stuff she really needed.

my mom made both of my kids speacil blanket,, just blanket with crochte edges,, yet she made them make it more specail,,, I also have my baby book we got and I filled them out as they grew

I always do the laundry basket as well, usually one of the rectangular ones, because they're bigger. I like to also include some small items for the mom- pretty soaps, bubble bath, candles- things to destress.

I had two baby showers on my first and third babies. #3 was 8 years after #2 My fourth child was 12 years after #3.....

My favorite gifts were from my aunts who made a blanket, sweater and matching hats. I just went to my daughter in laws shower Thanksgiving time and there is just so many things out there to buy. I wanted to buy it all!!! :)

I think anything that shows thought and love went into it was good. I was going to knit a blanket, but my hands are too bad. I was glad I didn't when my daughter in law got several outstanding beautiful blankets. Mine would have paled in comparison, those ladies were really very very talented.

I always give the book - Love You Forever when I go to a baby shower.

With our first one, we loved getting all the cutesy little outfits (but don't buy a lot in the 0-3 months size since they grow SO fast). And I think the best gift we got was the bottle warmer....came in really handy at 3am!

my fav gift that i recieved was a johnny jumper~ it hangs form the door ways and the baby can bounce. My oldest use to laugh when he touched the floor..oh baby memories..lol

Make sure you know whether she's going to be using disposables or cloth diapers if you are going to do diapers. One of my friends recently had a baby and ended up with 14 packages of diapers. She's a stay at home mom, and only uses disposables when she's out shopping or something (maybe 3-4 diapers a week). Same thing with bottles and breastfeeding.

My prayers are with her. Try books, bibs, cloth diapers (great for burp cloths and inexpensive!) onsies (lots of onsies)

I am glad to hear that she is now counting down the weeks Bridget. I personally loved my moses basket and my Baby Bjorn baby carrier, but other than that it sounds like you've got some great ideas.

One of our favorite gifts was a "gag" gift for the new daddy. The New Father's Survival Kit! It was so cute--it was full of things like infant tylenol, extra strength tylenol for daddy, gas medication, pacifiers, teethers and orajel, rubber gloves, an apron, safety goggles...I can't recall everything but I wrote it down for the baby book. It was fun, but still had practical stuff in it.

I also loved the baby books we got from a close friend of ours. She still mostly buys him books for holidays and birthdays.

I was going to tell you what I'm doing for my coworker, but then I realized she is a member, and may potentially come across this, so just to be safe, I'll keep quiet! :o)

I think my favorite gift was a diaper cake that Jenna made for me because not only did it have diapers, but it also had stuff tucked away inside of it.

I also liked getting outfits, bottles, and wipes.

And I got a Diaper Genie 2 (the new version) and it's so much easier than the twist version they used to have, I absolutely love it for Mikaela's dirty diapers!

May 9th is also Aidan's (my son) 3rd birthday.

I don't know if you are getting a bigger item, or littler ones. One of the best items I recieved at my shower was a bouncy chair. The kind with the vibration and music. It was very comforting to the baby and allowed me to put the baby down while I did some laundry or the dishes. It kind of cradles the baby and the vibrations comfort them too. It works for newborns all the way to about 4- 5 months I believe.
The other things I loved we the little baskets that contained all the goodies, diapers, Johnsons baby lotion, shampoo, desiten, baby wipes. You can never have too many of those.

Clothes, bottles, blankets and gift cards/checks were gifts I received for my baby shower. Of course, who doesn't need extra diapers, wipes, baby bathtub and just extra little goodies for mom.

One thing I loved was a Diaper cake I got from my shower when I had Maddie. (I am making one for my sis for her shower in a few weeks!!) Diapers are always a good thing!!

Oh and baby blankets, even though I got TONS I loved them all! I am also making a taggie for my sis too. I really need to get on doing that stuff soon..

Oh congrats to your friends!!! How exciting! I usually always get a pack of newborn diapers along with a gift. You are right they are not exicting, but very necessary, and I can imagine a parent bringing a new baby home and not realizing how many diapers they would need, having to run to the store, ect instead of spending time with the new little one!

I also tend to buy a lot of onesies, blankets and socks. I hear new moms go through those things fast!

I went to my cousin's baby shower in February, and brought her a big box of diapers!! You cn never have too many of those. Money was short, and I needed all the cash I culd find, just to get there, as it was out of town.

YAY for boys!

I was given a stroller too, which i used for both of my sons. So durable.
