Celebrate Spain’s Foods with EL COTO DE RIOJA Wines
New York, April 2009—On Sunday, June 7, 2009 from 11am to 3pm, the first annual
Paella Parade will take place outdoors at the new South Street Seaport location of New York Water Taxi Beach. Spanish chefs and restaurateurs from the tri-state area will unite for this first-of-its-kind event to showcase and highlight their Paella making skills accompanied by wines from leading Spanish winery El Coto de Rioja. Fans of Tempranillo and Spanish cuisine are expected to turn out in droves to witness Paella making at its best! Tickets, available for $25 at watertaxibeach.com, will allow
aficionados to taste each Paella presented as well as a selection of Rioja wines from
the Baron De Ley Group (El Coto, Baron de Ley, Museum and Maximo wines),
imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons. A portion of the ticket proceeds will go to
Action Against Hunger, a global humanitarian organization committed to eliminating
world hunger, and the Wine Course at the Department of Hospitality Management at
New York City College of Technology.
“We are excited to be joining forces with local Spanish chefs at this event”, says
Caterina Hausmann, Wildman’s Spanish wine brand Manager. “It is a natural marriage
of wine, food and camaraderie, a lifestyle perfected in Spanish culture and entertaining!
It is also the first time an event of this nature has ever been organized in the city,”
continues Hausmann “and one that El Coto de Rioja—Spain’s premier Rioja wine—is
very proud to be sponsoring here at home.”
Throughout the afternoon, gourmets and gourmands alike will witness chefs in
action and taste their culinary results. Chefs and restaurants slated to participate
include Socarrat, La Nacional, Solera, 1492 Food, Mercat, Cap I Pota, La Paella Tapas
Wine Bar & Restaurant, Don Pedro, Meson Asturias, and Xicala Wine & Tapas Bar, and
many more. At 2pm, a Paella Parade Panel consisting of press, celebrities, renowned
chefs, and familiar local personalities, will announce, in the spirit of friendly competition, the winners in the following categories: Prettiest Paella Presentation; Most Creative Paella; Best Use of Ingredients in a Paella; Best Overall Taste; and finally, Paella Parade Pleaser will be determined by the public in attendance.
The Paella Parade is presented by Frederick Wildman and Sons, importers of
El Coto de Rioja, Baron de Ley, Museum and Maximo wines; and participating sponsors
New York Water Taxi Beach; Paris Gourmet; PaellaPans.com; Miquel & Valentino
presented by Scout Marketing; Action Against Hunger and New York City College
of Technology.

Dorine - along with hare add duck - paella is what ever is local and prevalent and cheap (or free!) AND oh so good!
Madame - I wish you were right handed
Don't eat fish! (there is nothing I can say)
Shellfish allergies mean you can't eat the paella I made (see photo) but the one Dorine describes is doable (welll - maybe except for the snails . . . ) Try it, Katrina.
action and taste their culinary results.
This sounds like a wonderful event - have a good time and make sure you show us the pictures! Salud
Dorine - Kind of cheeky of me to ask to be judge, but who would invite me if I didn't? Here's what I sent them:
Hello ____
I scheduled the day off to "do" this event. Thanks for the invite.
I've been a tapas judge in Zaragoza, Spain, and a wine judge in the Finger Lakes. I written about both, and paella. I'm available as a Paella judge for this event if you need one. I definitely want to cover it for my Food Column on gather.com .

I think that whenever you make a trip to around here, we have to make paella together!
Katie - I'm going, although I thought it was as Press - to cover it for Gather. We'll see.
I saw pictures of the "beach" and it says South Street Seaport, but it also says Long Island City (elsewhere) so I'm still not sure where it is. I'll know more closer to June.
Katie dear.....no... no... no.... for paella chorizo yes... kielbasa no... ;-)
Dorine, I can get Spanish chorizo here but not Cantimplanos...still a good embutido anyway.
