lol S.S. is socialism? What an assenine statement. Social Security is paid by personal taxes and the only thing wrong with it is the government can't keep their fingers out of the till.

maybe I'm wrong but aren't vet benefits contractual? Doesn't one earn those as a result of service injuries or retirement?

The S.S. would work well if the government would keep their hands out of it, it is like once they had a taste they just kept going back for more without giving thought to what it was originally set up for.

I have paid into the S.S. account for many many many years and would like to know how is that socialist ?

Hopefully that SS everyone pays into will still get the benefits when they are old enough to receive it.

True, Social Security and Medicare are socialistic. Of those who receive them, such as me, who complains? These two programs are among the greatest things this country has ever done. What party initiated them? The party of heart vs. money.

There are some admirable socialistic programs that this country needs, like universal health care. I call it universal healthcare.

Chloe, you will get your benefits. SS is too important to be changed. We hear scare tactics often from those opposed to SS. They simply do not want rich people to pay taxes to pay for something they do not need.

Leo, I agree with you 100%. You commented on my post that somewhat deals with this issue, so I'm hoping you get what I mean when I say that right now I'm dealing with the hogwash critisism on this subject too. I'm sorry, that I paid into this program and had to cash out on it early. It's not my problem that another person has no problem with getting a job and making money in that fashion. If they don't make enough, don't complain about other's sapping your income, get a different job! The system is supposed to work like this. But, EVERYBODY feels entitled to the money the system generates and that creates the problem.

Agree with Leo completely. I am a veteran whose wife is on a social security and a state retirement. Due to health reasons, I too would take my social security in August , however I must continue to work through the arthritis pain for several more years simply to maintain health insurance.

Why we are the only advanced industrialised country without universal health care is beyond me but I must blame those to whom profit is more important than human life. The right wing.

Actually I am in favor of Social Security, Medicare and Veteran’s Benefits. I just think some people are inconsistent when they complain about "socialism".

If I am getting a check from the government, it is an earned benefit to which I am entitled. If someone else is getting a check from the government, it is socialism.

All in someone's point of view I guess.... someone could say a lot of things are socialistic if they pay into the system for it, but never need or use it themselves.

I get SSDI and Medicare and I believe both programs should be abolished. Just because I was forced to pay for something since the day I first got a job, doesn't mean I have agreed with that forced payment.

Since I was forced, it would be illogical not to receive the benefits, as promised.

The fact is, Social Security has six letters in common with the word it is derived from, socialism.

The fact is, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are three promises the government never should have made.

Social Security was designed for one thing, to supplement a persons income through old age not give anyone a free living. S.S. was not designed to give disabled people a living wage or to support government expenses, S.S. was not designed to support children when a parent dies either yet many kids are supported on S.S. until the age of 18 even though the parent in some cases did not work one year before dieing. people that are disabled physically or mentally should be helped but not out of the S.S. funds.

I am also a vet and if people that never see a stretch in the military want to get rid of VA benefits I say take them they are nothing but noise blowing in the wind anyway and all us vets are screwed by the hypocrites that say they support the troops and their loses by blowing wind.

We have just seen the best proof for 8 years that a vet getting injured and losing limbs mean nothing to the political hacks that send them off to their corporate wars and the public is no better or it would not allow such a disgrace to fall on the country.
