Children's Summer Reading Programs
Whether you choose to start your own book club, sign your child up for the reading program at your local library, or subscribe to an online children's book club, the benefits of children reading during the summer is invaluable.
- Encourages reading on a daily basis. Children who have a variety of reading materials available to them are more likely to read, especially if the materials are geared toward their specific interests.
- Promotes family togetherness. You and your family can spend time reading together. This is a great hobby that everyone can enjoy. Let each member of the family choose his or her own book or article. Then family members can share what they have read and their thoughts on the book or article with each other.
- Provides insight into your child's true thoughts.
Signing your children up with a kids book club is a great way to encourage reading! Book clubs typically provide a variety of books and book recommendations that will help inspire a love of reading in your kids.
- Book Adventure is a FREE reading motivation program for children in grades K-8. Children create their own book lists from over 7,000 recommended titles, take multiple choice quizzes on the books they've read, and earn points and prizes for their literary successes. http://www.bookadventure.org/registration.asp
- Summmer Reading Kicks Off at Scholastic : Are You up for the Challenge? Scholastic Summer Challenge Campaign Uses Online Games and Community to Get Kids Excited About Reading "4 or More" Books This Summer. Children ages eight and up can log on to www.scholastic.com/summer to read for fun, play games, and help children in need.

I am a Children's Librarian in a small public library and our summer reading program will be going on the whole month of June.
wow great information, April!! I am going to have to join some of these programs!! thanks:0)
i really appreciate this - ty ty
'Promotes family togetherness' this is very important since many people feel disconnected from family members
This program works best when children have want and the freedom to make their own choices.
My goodness, did I miss the section about the free summer reading programs in public libraries throughout the United States? Be Creative @ your Library is featured in about 40 states and most other states have their own statewide or local reading programs. Public libraries partner with other organizations, such as Boys & Girls Clums and the YMCA, to expand the reach of their summer reading programs. Librarians trainied especially to serve children make libraries one of the best places to bring your child in the summer and all year long - for a lifetime.
