Any of you who have embarked, recently, on almost any course of study, and or, research will certainly have discovered that the past , as well as the future and the present is extremely maliable. Not only is 'It' changing, but at a pace never before experienced by human kind.
I'm not ( all ) that old. I was born on the leading-edge of what we refer to as 'the baby-boom, in 1947 AD. And yet, I am very much a product of the years that came before- A product of a system of education established in what has been identified ( by others ) as the 'Golden Age of Education' 1857 - 1957.
As I look back at what we casually speak of as 'history', certainly as it has been taught from the perspective of elementary, junior high, high school and even college during that era, it has been and continues to be, changing at an exponential rate.
Over the last few weeks I have been attempting to express, clearly and simply how I ( A good writer begins speaking from that place of personal experience ) have been impacted, shaped, by media- First print, books, newspapers, magazines, then radio, television & motion pictures, and finally, this thing we call 'internet'.
Like the individual colors of the rainbow, it is difficult, almost impossible to separate one influence from another and for a myriad of reasons- Which brings us to the point of this submission: That's why they call it exponential, Isn't it?
Every author is effected, dramatically, whether they are conscious of this effect or not, by each and every one of those components of 'media' collectively, While each and every component is impacted, in turn, by one another.
Russell Crowe was on 'Live' with Regis & Kelly the other day and he spoke, rather eloquently, of how the character he played in 'Robin Hood' was being changed by his research into the history, of among other things, the 'real' King Richard.
Stop and think about that for a moment. Our vision, our experience of the past is in a constant state of flux- With it, our present, And Our Future ...
What is your experience?
** Wittgenstein was right Please See Comment below. Ludwig Wittgenstein understated the problem when he said, " Philosophy is the battle against bewitchment of the mind by means of language."
