A few months ago, I mentioned in a Living By Faith or The Word For The Day that Jesus had emptied Himself of His Godly powers when He came to earth so that He would live just as we live and taught us to live by faith with no special powers. I couldn't remember the scripture reference at the time and had some people questioning if what I was saying was really in the Bible.
Well, a couple of days ago, I was listening to a pastor and he used the scripture and gave the reference for it so now I can pass it on to you. It is Philippians 2: 6 - 7. I'm going to put the Amplified version's in here first because it so clearly explains what Jesus did. Below it, I'm putting the New American Standard's version, which uses the wording I did when I said He emptied Himself.
Philippians 2:6-7 (Amp) :
6Who, although being essentially one with God and in the form of God [[a]possessing the fullness of the attributes which make God God], did not [b]think this equality with God was a thing to be eagerly grasped [c]or retained,
7But stripped Himself [of all privileges and [d]rightful dignity], so as to assume the guise of a servant (slave), in that He became like men and was born a human being.
Philippians 2:6-7 (New American Standard) :
6who, although He (A)existed in the (B)form of God, (C)did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7but [a](D)emptied Himself, taking the form of a (E)bond-servant, and (F)being made in the likeness of men.
The reason Jesus did what He did is because He wanted us to live as He did on this earth expecting to do what He did and greater things by using our faith that is built on His Word. If He came down here with His Godly powers and did all of those miracles based on His Godliness, then we could never hope to aspire to use our faith to do the type of miracles He did. But Jesus Himself said that we, as believers, would do what He had done and greater things than these.
I don't have that scripture reference with me and don't have my Bible with me to look it up so I'll have to find it later and let you know. But the point is that when Jesus was on this earth, He did not come here to live as God. He was God but He came to live as a man and a servant to man to teach men how to live by faith.
I'm so glad He did that because I use my faith constantly and Jesus said to do that. In Mark 11:23 and 24, Jesus said:
Mark 11:23-24:
23Truly I tell you, whoever says to this mountain, Be lifted up and thrown into the sea! and does not doubt at all in his heart but believes that what he says will take place, it will be done for him.
24For this reason I am telling you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe (trust and be confident) that it is granted to you, and you will [get it].
When you read that, you have one of two choices. Either you believe what Jesus said or you don't. There's no in between. Jesus never left open what He said to debate. You either believe what He said or you don't.
People argue about different gods and different ways to Heaven but Jesus didn't leave any argument open.
John 14:6:
6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
I don't see any other alternatives mentioned. You either believe this or you don't. There are no other alternatives. Jesus was very specific about things.
I've said what I wanted to say, it's up to the Holy Spirit to deal with it from here.
