Unsettling neighbor incident

Earlier this afternoon, I had forgotten to lock my apartment door after I checked the mail. So when my downstairs neighbor knocked on the door, he managed to accidentally push it in and come into my apartment! I was pretty upset as he didn't try to leave the apartment. He wanted to talk about the banging that was going on? I told him we were having the exact same problem with my upstairs neighbor, but he didn't seem to really understand that it was the old walls.

But to just come on in like that? I mean it was unsettling, and I'm glad my boyfriend was home with me at the time that this happened.  I'm a fairly private person, and I never understand people who allow people to come in and go in their houses as they please.

Wow! That is not ok! The maitenance man did that to me once, only he used a key and let himself in. He didn't even knock and my dog bit him. Ha! You should get a dog!!!

no, you need to report this insident to your landlord so the neighbor can be officially notified he can't just walk into appartments.

I would definitely be upset. He had no right to enter your home, even if the door was wide open.

i totally understand....it's like don't come in unless i say come in.....for over a year we have had nurses coming and going almost every day.......i sit in my chair in the living room that has now become the "hospital".........my wound is on my ankle.......a few days ago a new nurse came and said.......could we go to your bedroom to do this......NO..... it really caught her off guard.....but.....NOBODY goes in my room........

That is crazy. We had a matinence person do that a while back, I was pretty ticked off. We were sleeping and him calling to us from the middle of our living room woke us up.

I always keep my door locked. I had friends that thought it was ok to just knock and walk in. Some people have no clue what boundaries and manners are.

I hope you explained to him how you felt about it. He may have just been raised differently.

We have a very "open" house. If we know our friends are stopping by, they usually just open the door and give a yell that they are here or let themselves through the fence if they know we are out back.

that's creepy and you are very lucky your boyfriend was there....I'm so annal about locking up that I tend to lock the keys in ... oiy! I really need to get some spares made...

I lived in several places where I had wonderful "older" (I'm talking in their '90s) neighbors. They remember when neighborhoods were friendly and safe places and wouldn't think twice abouit walking in if the door wasn't locked. I got used to it in both places, but it is unnerving.

Yeah, I was startled that he just thought it was ok to walk in, even if the door was accidentally opened. I really couldn't discuss whatever he wanted to discuss with me, as I was pretty uptight about him just walking in. That is odd. I would have been upset too.

We have kids at our house all the time. They are friends of my kids. They usually just walk in but we have told them to. There are still a couple of them that will knock first.

Oh Beth, how scary.....I'd just be absolutely petrified!!!!!! Sure glad that your boyfriend was there and you not alone........what a freaky thing to happen, and I'm glad you did report it to your landlord!

Wow! That would definitely be unsettling. What if you were taking a shower or something?
Oh I would of been scary to death. I think I would started screaming to tell the person to get out. Matter of fact I know I would have. That is one of my fears is that someone will try to come here when my husband is at work and I am alone.....as there is alot of break ins since the economy sucks.

ONCE I came in here and forgot to lock the door. At the time my computer was in the kitchen facing out, with the stove and fridge behind me. I was sitting in my housecoat one night listening to music, and I thought I heard someone inside (before Walker came up here). You can see the doorway from the kitchen. When I looked up and saw a GUY standing there, the first thing I did was reach behind me, and grab the empty cast-iron skillet I happened to have sitting on the turned-off burner. He took one look at the skillet in my hand, and RAN!

That's not good at all. I mean, if the door accidentally opens when you knock on it, you stand in the doorway and try to talk to the person from there until they invite you in. You never just walk into someone's house. The only people I would just walk in on are close family members and even that, I would announce myself first.

When I lived in the country our neighbors walked in and out all the time (we never locked the doors), but that was just the way it was. However now that I live in the city I would be a little freaked out if someone walked in uninvited- especially if I was alone or just home with my daughter.
