Welcome to the HelpCenter™!

The original Gather help series -- assisting members since 2006.
Need a little help, or have a question?
Can't find something? ...or figure out how something works?
Ask other members!

"I uploaded a photo to my post and I would like to spotlight it on my profile page...how can I do this?"Photos uploaded to a photo essay (post/article) differ from photos uploaded directly to your photo gallery ("my photos") or to albums. When viewing these photos, there is no "spotlight this" link available from which you can spotlight the content on your profile page. You also cannot spotlight these photos from your "My Activities" feed, as post photos do not appear in this area.
Therefore, spotlighting a post photo cannot be done on Gather (currently) unless you manually create the ability yourself.
You may do this easily by modifying the following URL (web address):
http://username.gather.com/spotlight.action?contentId=myphoto&contentTypeId=2
To spotlight your desired photo using the URL above, you will need to replace username and myphoto with your username and the file identification number for the photo in your post.
What's a file identification number?
All photos on Gather are assigned a unique number when they are published. This number appears in the URL for the photo to the immediate right of fileId=
For example, in this URL for a recent HelpCenter photo:
http://www.gather.com/viewImage.jsp?fileId=3096224745271340&articleId=281474977492697
...the file identification number is 3096224745271340.
Note: The URL for your post photo appears in your browser's address bar when viewing the photo.
Replace myphoto with this number, add your username, and paste the URL into your browser's address bar.
Press "Enter" and your selected post photo will be spotlighted!
Note: Entering the URL in your browser will display a blank page. You may close this page once it appears.
To illustrate, here is a complete sample URL which I may use anytime for spotlighting this specific image:
http://threemenfishing.gather.com/spotlight.action?contentId=3096224745271340&contentTypeId=2
To keep the URL readily available, bookmark (or add to 'favorites') the basic code without the file identification number. Then modify the URL in your browser's address bar to include the FileId of the photo you wish to spotlight.
I've noticed some resistance/slowness when publishing as well. However, I don't know if it's related to the fix that was applied last night.
I was hoping Gather had added a Visa card to awards but NO - that didn't happen.
Now I'm going to see if my groups have fake numbers.
DD — It's my understanding that no change was made beyond the resetting of the group counts...but I hope your experience isn't just coincidental. Please let me know how it's going!
REALLY close call today, kevin. i do not know that much about viruses, but went to open 3 attachments from a good friend. Don't have norton, but it came up NORTON, screaming that one attach had a virus. gave me option of opening the other two, so i did, and the one with the virus popped up, doubled.
Closed everything, opened malaware, took an hour to clean up. What the heck? is my computer now safe? I have a norton disc, but when I used it before, it used to fight with the built-in safeguards in computer, so I took it out. should I reinstall? this was scarey!
Did you follow all of the steps I listed yesterday for resolving your post publishing problem?
I understand that you can now publish photos (Yay!), but some of the steps I listed should also resolve your inability to share posts too.
Please let me know.
I'm glad that Norton intercepted your virus. In the future, if one attachment has a virus, there's a high probability other files attached to the same message will also.
If you run a full scan of your computer using Norton, and remove all identified threats, you should be OK...as long as you have updated your definition files before the scan. Otherwise, you could have a virus on your computer that Norton won't detect.
yup i have some"Stuck" in moderation.
guess i will wait till the middle of may to get those fixed.
hope u have a great day.
I'm not certain if the latest version of Movie Maker allows for the exporting of video files into other formats. Therefore, you might want to ensure that you have the latest version and check the export options.
If not, then there are a large variety of options available to you depending upon what software/applications you have installed on your computer. Many of the converters and software programs are free...although I don't have a specific recommendation for you.
I'm sorry about the delay in responding...I've been in a meeting.
When viewing your "other photos" page, trying holding down the Ctrl key while clicking the F5 key one time. See if that resolves the problem.
If not, let me know as this problem can have several causes and there a few additional steps you can take to resolve it.
But seriously, if she needs more help, send her my way. But I will keep checking back to see if she says anything more about it.
I just wanted to ask a quick question plz. Is there a way for me to be able to view on my own MyGather Page the newest added contents?? Like what shows up on the Gather Home Page?? Did I miss that in my settings, or do I just have to go to the "Explorer" Page??
Well, the question may be quick, but the answer may not be!
I was away at the time you posted your comment above, so I apologize for the delayed response.
Are you seeking the most recent comments on YOUR content?
Also, when you refer to the "Gather Home Page", do you mean your "My Gather" page?
If you can be a bit more specific about what comments you're seeking, I can likely direct you where (or how) to find them.
Thanks!
I just wondered if on either of those pages, "my" Profile or "my" Home page there is a way for me to view like the most current public post added to the Gather Home Page without clicking on the Explore link.. or is that the easiest?? I'm guessing I need to go examine this more closely. I just get so darned "caught up in stuff" when I get on here..lol
MyHotComments <font color="#0000FF">I just want to say a BIG THANK YOU for all your help!!!</font>
Your "my profile" page displays your recent activity.
Your "my gather" page displays the content and comments of people in your nework (primarily).
Therefore, to see content published by members that are not in your network, you will need to use the "explore" link, visit groups, or perform a search for content.
Does that answer your question?
Addendum: You can also set up the "by groups" and "by interests" feeds on your "my gather" page to bring content in the community to you, based upon your entered criteria.
Oh for the rest of you reading Kevins post, its an inside joke.
I like the image, but why is the bird flying out of the lens?
Where is that darn Sassy Cat?
Uh-oh, there's a generic commentor. "Nice photo" ??
I know it was rather late the nite I sent you an email about ur work. I read it again, and perhaps it sounded all "wrong", or I didn't give enough information.
I've seen now from some of your post that you do not work for Gather. Darn, you sure do an awful lot of work to "not" be an employee. :-)
Next question, do you build websites for people on other places? Or, do you have a software package which includes some of your stuff that is "pretty easy" to use with rights to use whereever one wants to?? I've done stuff with FP 07. It takes me forever, and not "exactly" what I want because I am a "self taught" pc person.
I ask the above question because I am interested in having some work done, or doing it myself (on another site). I am not talking "free" work as I am guessing you do here... which btw is awsome!!
Thanking you in advance for your reply and if via email is the correct way to respond, then please do and just delete this and forgive my Newbie Stupidity.
Merry
What's the matter, Amy, did Kevin nail you for generic comments and graphics?
The smileys are cute, Amy. You know I'm just giving you a hard time. ;o)
And Kevin did you look at my article "I am a bird watcher"?
Have a good night!
Feel free to use the LIVE HELP chat. Then you can ask questions privately...if desired.
Welcome to the late-night HelpCenter party!
I haven't had time to address your longer comment above yet...but will soon.
Yeah, the party wound down some time ago. Now I'm just cleaning up the mess.
Thanks. It was only an experiment, which I'll probably do away with soon.
DD - I wish I had one right about now...along with a cup of hot tea.
I should fit in just fine with the late night party!! lol... still waiting on the other response as soon as you get a chance though. Yes, I know you are busy, and it is not an emergency. I just want to know for the future.
Have a great Sunday evening!
