Featured Question of the Day

"Help! I'm having a lot of problems sharing posts & photos. I keep getting an "Error...let's get you back on track" page. What am I doing wrong, and what can I do to fix this?"

Posting/publishing difficulties are often caused by a connectivity problem or a conflict with your computer in some way.

You can often minimize or eliminate these problems by following the steps below:
  1. Sign out of Gather (using the SIGN OUT link at the top of any page).

  2. Clear your browser's temporary internet files (cache) & cookies.

  3. Restart your browser (close it, then reopen it).

  4. Sign in to Gather again, making certain that the "Keep me signed in" box that appears on the sign-in page is selected.

  5. When publishing a post, click the "Save as Draft" button often. A draft is automatically saved when you upload photos to your post. Also, keep yourt editing session as short as possible. The longer you stay in the editor tweaking your post, the more likely you won't end up with a post at all. To reduce time spent in the editor, create all posts outside of Gather in a word processor (Word, Wordpad, etc.) or even your email message composer...then copy into your post on Gather.

  6. If that doesn't improve your ability to publish, then update your operating system (Windows, Linux, etc.), your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox) and JAVA to the latest versions.

  7. You may also attempt to use a different browser as some members achieve greater publishing success using a second browser.

  8. As a last resort, deactivate (temporarily) your internet firewall application...and possibly even your anti-virus software. These applications can occasionally interfere with publishing on Gather.

Hi Kevin, I was just browsing, Elaine S has an article from/for Carol Lloyd. She has been unable to post for three months. I'm guessing it's not going to clear itself up, right. I haven't tried shutting off the firewall yet. Maybe soon though.

Hi, Kevin. I am ready to get these posts finalized and another question has come up. In reference to putting a link to the 101 Tutorial list post in the other posts: I can not do that until I cut, paste and publish it right? BUT, if I do it then I will be editing the original 10 posts and they will publish to all those groups again, right?

Good morning Kevin.

The hd has been replaced in my laptop, Windows XP and office 2007 are installed along with Symantec anti-virus sw, all of which I had prior to the hd failure. The only problem I am having is that now as soon as I log into Gather my laptop locks up. I can go to any other site without issues but for some reason my laptop hates Gather. Any ideas??

Joanne,

Thank you for letting me know about Carol. While sometimes publishing difficulties can be caused by a Gather glitch, in most cases they can be rectified by following the steps above. Also, there could be an application running (possibly in the background) on your computer that also may affect your ability to publish. Hence, if the steps above don't work for you, there are a few additional things you can try to alleviate the problem.

I am still experiencing a publishing problem in that my posts are not being published to all groups I select. This appears to be another Gather-related glitch.

Good morning Kevin. I sent you an email a couple days ago and have not rec'd a response. My problem is with with posting pics and posts. When I firist joined Gather I was asked to install the Gather Active X plug-in. I don't think that installed properly and I can't figure out how to get that prompt again. Can you send this to me or can you tell me how to do this. By the way, I have updated Java, adobe, etc. to see if that was my problem. No help with that. Thanks in advance.

Katherine,

I recommend Firefox 3.0. You can also use Google's Chromium browser, but there are a few quirks when using this browser with Gather. Plus, Chromium doesn't have the same customization options available to Firefox (yet).

I always suggest trying another browser as this helps to isolate the cause of the problem. If your experience is the same in Firefox, then the problem lies beneath the browser at your operating system, other computer applications, or your internet connection.

Drats, It's still working, going to an error page. Even save as draft is not working. I am glad I got the Java update though. Itred all the clean cache options and even restarted. Videos load better (but painfully slow) on Internet Explorer, but my mail box works better on AOL browser.

Cynthia,

I suggest that you remove Gather's ActiveX control, and then reinstall it.

Here's how:
  1. Open Internet Explorer 7.

  2. Choose Tools from the browser menu.

  3. From the resulting drop-down menu, choose Manage Add-ons, followed by Enable or Disable Add-ons....

  4. In the Manage Add-ons window, choose Downloaded ActiveX Controls from the Show: drop-down box.

The resulting list will show every ActiveX Control that Internet Explorer 7 has installed. The Gather photo uploader will be listed here.

  5. Locate the Gather ActiveX control, then click the Delete button in the Delete ActiveX area at the bottom of the window, and click OK.

  6. If prompted to restart Internet Explorer, do so.

  7. If you're not prompted, do it anyway. Close and then reopen Internet Explorer.
Attempt to upload a photo to Gather. You should be prompted to install the Gather ActiveX control again.

Please let me know how that works for you.

You told me to "add the following to the END of the URL" when creating links. I tried it and clicked on it and it said there was nothing with that URL. What I did was copied the address at the top of the window at the group home, put that in and then the part you gave me. What did I do wrong?

Hi Kevin,
I'm getting multiple mailings from the same people and it's really clogging up my email box -but they're not sent from groups, just the individual. Is this a glitch too? (maybe I'm getting yours- the ones you're missing.)

Also, can anyone tell me how to turn off ratings? I've looked and looked and I'm sure it's easy, but I can't find it!

Thank you,

Michelle,

Gather only allows you to remove one page of mail at a time. This can be quite a lengthy process if you have a lot of messages in your inbox. Fortunately, there is a free add-on for most browsers that will accomplish this task automatically for you.

If you would like to try it, please let me know and I'll provide additional information.

That is why I recommended that tag...it isn't being used on Gather currently. It will begin to show up once you publish content in the community using that tag.

As for the URL add-on...I'll take a look.

Hi, Kevin. Today is moving along quite speedily on your post . The only thing noticed by self lately is the :up to nine times notify on the same article. I have been going in and
taking the "notify me" option off the ones that have been consistant in this. It has to be a "gather glitch'? ( actually, i have such peace in that way, have deleted the option on anyone who posts a lot in one day. mailbox is delightfully quiet and I know how to find posts without the 'notify",lol.

Marilyn,

You turn off ratings when you publish your content. On the publishing options page, you will have the option of turning on/off comments and ratings. To see these options you need to click the "options" link which appears to the RIGHT of the words Rating and Commenting Options

Penni,

If the notification is related to a friend and not a group, then it is likely a glitch. You should only receive one notification when your friends publish content. However, sometimes a member will publish the same post multiple times (see my comment above to Marilyn).

Also, you may receive multiple group notifications for the same post...depending upon the number of groups the post is published to.

Hello again Kevin, in regards to the question I asked you yesterday, I'm guessing thats more of a Gather policy, right? I am hearing a completely different story from some of the members on the games website. I am still waiting on something official from them. Sorry to bother you again with this. I know you suggested ways I could do it but it still felt kind of sneaky to me. I just want to make sure I am not breaking any rules.

Brenda,

It's not a Gather policy. It's the law. However, it would depend upon what games you are referring to, and how you were going to use it.

For example, you cannot take an image from most video games (PS3, Xbox, etc.) and post it on Gather as a photo. This violates copyright law. However, you can use that photo in the ways I specified yesterday.

Some online games may allow you to use their images, with attribution (credit and link to the site). You would need to refer to the TOS for that site to be certain though. Keep in mind that publishing on Gather is not considered 'personal use'. You are profiting from what you publish here...therefore, use on Gather violates most of the terms set up on other sites regarding the use of their images or content.

If you can direct me to sample site, or game, I would be happy to look at it further and see if there are any red flags.

Thanks Brenda. All that really matters is that you receive permission from the other site. As with any content, if you have that (and it is in written form), then publish away!

However, you should include in the caption that you have the permission of the site/game creator to post the photos. This will help you avoid problems/discussion here.

Please let me know what they say.

How do I copy & paste posts? I can copy the body fine, but is there a way to copy the picture and the tags--like just copy the whole thing--that I am missing or do I need to reinsert the pic and type in the tags?

C.L.,

You can copy the post by clicking and dragging through it. Then copy and paste to a new post. You can copy and paste tags the same way. However, to have an image appear in content listings with the post, you have to upload the photo again.

Tip: I keep a file of 'tag lists' which I use depending upon the content I am publishing. I can then simply copy and paste the entire list when required.

Thought of another one, can I do the ones I have to do and "save as a draft?" Then upload them when I get it all ready?

Yes, you can save posts as drafts. Then when you are ready to publish, they will publish as NEW posts...no matter how long ago the drafts were saved.

Isn't it called Google Chrome? I had it for awhile. It gave me problems, so I switched back to Firefox again.

Kari — You are correct. "Chrome" is the common name for the browser, but it is built on a platform known as "Chromium". In some circles the names are synonymous...but it probably shouldn't be. Chrome is still too new to be strongly recommended for Gather...but it does have its advantages.

Kevin:
Anytime Gather "fixes" or "improves our Gather Experience" I think we should come up with drinking games associated with the outcome.

A shot for every glitch no? Would make for an interesting weekend around here.

Heather,

Great idea!! A Gather drinking game!!

There are so many possibilities...like a shot for every:

1) Post claiming another "Swagbuck" or "MCC" win.

2) "Points update" post is published.

3) Bible quote that's used in a post.

etc.

I would have suggested a shot each time spam is published in the community, but we'd all be unconscious within an hour.

*snort*

I'd like to bet shots for every post that proclaims they:

1) have a headache

2) are getting the flu or a cold

3) their kids are puking

4) they are going to sleep

This could be fun!! Ya know I've never been drunk before. Is there a prize for which one of us passes out first??

I'll buy the first round because I am celebrating. I got permission to post my pics and videos.

Kevin, I will send you a copy of their email to me and a link to the game discussion forum, but not tonight.

That's great Brenda!

As I said above, as long as you have permission from the copyright holder/game creator, then you are able to publish them here without concern...assuming they abide by the TOS in other ways.

These aren't x-rated games you're playing are they?

Me, play x-rated games?

Actually there are cheats to make it x-rated but I wouldn't post that on here.

I'm trying to figure out something creative to do with it. I'm not going to post tons of stuff. I did at one point have a Gather family(Tom, MaryAnn,Pam and Chuck) but I won't say anymore.

And if anyone reading this thinks its ok to post stuff from their games, I would strongly suggest they check with the owners. I'm guessing not all owners will allow this.

No children, they all lived together in a tent on the beach. But then I felt sorry for them and built them a house.

ha ha ha ...that paints a great mental image. It reminds me of a children's story titled "We Were Tired of Living in a House". A group of children ran away from home and lived at the beach, in a tree, in a cave, at the swamp, and a variety of places before eventually returning home....with laundry.

Brenda said "Me, play x-rated games?" Seems I remember who came up with the x-rated versions of Twas the Night Before Christmas!!
