"Help! I'm having a lot of problems sharing posts & photos. I keep getting an "Error...let's get you back on track" page. What am I doing wrong, and what can I do to fix this?"You can often minimize or eliminate these problems by following the steps below:
Thank You!
The hd has been replaced in my laptop, Windows XP and office 2007 are installed along with Symantec anti-virus sw, all of which I had prior to the hd failure. The only problem I am having is that now as soon as I log into Gather my laptop locks up. I can go to any other site without issues but for some reason my laptop hates Gather. Any ideas??
Thank you for letting me know about Carol. While sometimes publishing difficulties can be caused by a Gather glitch, in most cases they can be rectified by following the steps above. Also, there could be an application running (possibly in the background) on your computer that also may affect your ability to publish. Hence, if the steps above don't work for you, there are a few additional things you can try to alleviate the problem.
I am still experiencing a publishing problem in that my posts are not being published to all groups I select. This appears to be another Gather-related glitch.
Yes, you are correct. I meant to add the link to all future posts. For now, just a link to the group should be fine.
Have you tried using another browser? ...and do you experience the same problem?
What browser are you using?
I've not tried another browser because I never had any problems using IE with Gather and I'm using the same version as I was prior to my HD crashing. What other browser do you recommend I try?
I recommend Firefox 3.0. You can also use Google's Chromium browser, but there are a few quirks when using this browser with Gather. Plus, Chromium doesn't have the same customization options available to Firefox (yet).
I always suggest trying another browser as this helps to isolate the cause of the problem. If your experience is the same in Firefox, then the problem lies beneath the browser at your operating system, other computer applications, or your internet connection.
I suggest that you remove Gather's ActiveX control, and then reinstall it.
Here's how:
- Open Internet Explorer 7.
- Choose Tools from the browser menu.
- From the resulting drop-down menu, choose Manage Add-ons, followed by Enable or Disable Add-ons....
- In the Manage Add-ons window, choose Downloaded ActiveX Controls from the Show: drop-down box.
- Locate the Gather ActiveX control, then click the Delete button in the Delete ActiveX area at the bottom of the window, and click OK.
- If prompted to restart Internet Explorer, do so.
- If you're not prompted, do it anyway. Close and then reopen Internet Explorer.
Attempt to upload a photo to Gather. You should be prompted to install the Gather ActiveX control again. The resulting list will show every ActiveX Control that Internet Explorer 7 has installed. The Gather photo uploader will be listed here.
Please let me know how that works for you.
I've checked my desktop and I have the same MS operating sytem and versions running and zero problems using Gather.
Have you tried all of the suggestions above, and that I provided to you previously...including attempting to publish using another browser?
The only problem I'm still having is that I cannot find my house keys. :op
I'm getting multiple mailings from the same people and it's really clogging up my email box -but they're not sent from groups, just the individual. Is this a glitch too? (maybe I'm getting yours- the ones you're missing.)
Also, can anyone tell me how to turn off ratings? I've looked and looked and I'm sure it's easy, but I can't find it!
Thank you,
Marilyn
I found that I'm only able to delete mail one page at a time, and if I try to check another and move on, it still only takes the last I've checked, from just one page. I don't know if that helps or not.
Gather only allows you to remove one page of mail at a time. This can be quite a lengthy process if you have a lot of messages in your inbox. Fortunately, there is a free add-on for most browsers that will accomplish this task automatically for you.
If you would like to try it, please let me know and I'll provide additional information.
That is why I recommended that tag...it isn't being used on Gather currently. It will begin to show up once you publish content in the community using that tag.
As for the URL add-on...I'll take a look.
I'll publish a comment to you on my "NOTES" post regarding the URL problem.
taking the "notify me" option off the ones that have been consistant in this. It has to be a "gather glitch'? ( actually, i have such peace in that way, have deleted the option on anyone who posts a lot in one day. mailbox is delightfully quiet and I know how to find posts without the 'notify",lol.
You turn off ratings when you publish your content. On the publishing options page, you will have the option of turning on/off comments and ratings. To see these options you need to click the "options" link which appears to the RIGHT of the words Rating and Commenting Options
I've noticed the multiple mail messages too, as well as multiple posts. I really don't know if it is a glitch, or someone not being careful enough or thinking through what they are doing.
If the notification is related to a friend and not a group, then it is likely a glitch. You should only receive one notification when your friends publish content. However, sometimes a member will publish the same post multiple times (see my comment above to Marilyn).
Also, you may receive multiple group notifications for the same post...depending upon the number of groups the post is published to.
*notify* button works quite well when turned off, lol. thanks! :)
I have turned off most of those notifications...except for some that I can't get to because of the 500 member limit on the email preferences page.
Everyone bracing for another 'update' tonight?
They're fixing something though....so what can possibly go wrong?
When I clicked the 'rewind', it took me back to the post of 04/19 instead of 04/20.
I don't even want to know what they are "fixing". :op
Trying to catch up here from a local power outage... Gather withdrawals were starting to kick in, LOL.
Have a great day...
It's not a Gather policy. It's the law. However, it would depend upon what games you are referring to, and how you were going to use it.
For example, you cannot take an image from most video games (PS3, Xbox, etc.) and post it on Gather as a photo. This violates copyright law. However, you can use that photo in the ways I specified yesterday.
Some online games may allow you to use their images, with attribution (credit and link to the site). You would need to refer to the TOS for that site to be certain though. Keep in mind that publishing on Gather is not considered 'personal use'. You are profiting from what you publish here...therefore, use on Gather violates most of the terms set up on other sites regarding the use of their images or content.
If you can direct me to sample site, or game, I would be happy to look at it further and see if there are any red flags.
However, you should include in the caption that you have the permission of the site/game creator to post the photos. This will help you avoid problems/discussion here.
Please let me know what they say.
You can copy the post by clicking and dragging through it. Then copy and paste to a new post. You can copy and paste tags the same way. However, to have an image appear in content listings with the post, you have to upload the photo again.
Tip: I keep a file of 'tag lists' which I use depending upon the content I am publishing. I can then simply copy and paste the entire list when required.
Anytime Gather "fixes" or "improves our Gather Experience" I think we should come up with drinking games associated with the outcome.
A shot for every glitch no? Would make for an interesting weekend around here.
I'm sorry that you're missing the drama.
I wish I could help.
ha ha ha
Great idea!! A Gather drinking game!!
There are so many possibilities...like a shot for every:
1) Post claiming another "Swagbuck" or "MCC" win.
2) "Points update" post is published.
3) Bible quote that's used in a post.
etc.
I'd like to bet shots for every post that proclaims they:
1) have a headache
2) are getting the flu or a cold
3) their kids are puking
4) they are going to sleep
This could be fun!! Ya know I've never been drunk before. Is there a prize for which one of us passes out first??
Kevin, I will send you a copy of their email to me and a link to the game discussion forum, but not tonight.
I think passing out should be its own reward.
As I said above, as long as you have permission from the copyright holder/game creator, then you are able to publish them here without concern...assuming they abide by the TOS in other ways.
These aren't x-rated games you're playing are they?
Actually there are cheats to make it x-rated but I wouldn't post that on here.
I'm trying to figure out something creative to do with it. I'm not going to post tons of stuff. I did at one point have a Gather family(Tom, MaryAnn,Pam and Chuck) but I won't say anymore.
Brenda, Brenda, Brenda ...you need to get out more babe!
By the way, in your pseudo-family....who were the children?
Brenda said "Me, play x-rated games?" Seems I remember who came up with the x-rated versions of Twas the Night Before Christmas!!
