I don't know if anyone will be able help, but I figured it would be worth a shot...
Our female dog, Abbey, has recently started losing the hair on her back legs. She isnt' itchy and she isn't licking...she is just losing the hair.
I don't want my son to touch her since it could be something contagious, but I feel bad for her. She loves attention...
Anyone have the same thing happen to their dog?

Any vets or vet assistants here?

Is she eating more? Does she act like she's cold--lying on floor vents in cold weather or insisting on getting in bed with you? Does she seem more lethargic? Is she gaining weight? Eating a lot more? Does her skin have an oily feel? All subtle signs of hypothyroidism in dogs....but also of other diseases.
Your vet can diagnose this with a simple blood test; your dog will be on meds for life but it is easily treatable.
It really is best to take her to the vet, but take careful note of her habits as far as eating, sleeping, drinking, excretory functions, exercise for a few days first.
Is the other dog licking her? That might be something to watch for as well.
I guess I could put on a pair of gloves and try the test you mentioned. I don't want to get mange if that is what she has since I am pregnant.
I did drain one anal gland recently - she has a difficult time expressing them, but I was unable to get the other one. I was just too grossed out by the whole process (morning sickness = weaker stomach).
She has seemed to have gained some weight, but she hates to eat. Many times she will let Rex take her food (which is another problem all together since Rex is 20lbs over weight, urgh!). She doesn't seem to be cold, and they have their own twin bed that they sleep on together. She doesn't seem lethargic, but her back legs almost seem a bit more stiff and she seems to be walking funny.
I do plan on taking her to the vet soon - possibly Tuesday. Rexey will have to go again as well since he is licking so bad on the legs that he will most likely have to be on medication again.
My husband has started taking them jogging every day now and walks them as well. Hopefully that will increase their energy enough to get them to stop the licking. I know when they are tired they don't lick as much. They still are going to the vet though...just to be safe!
