"I tried uploading an animated banner (.gif) to my group, but the animation isn't working...what's wrong?"With one of the recent site updates, Gather eliminated the ability for group banners to be animated. If you upload an animated GIF image for a banner, the image will be converted to a JPEG format, freezing the animation...as well as potentially reducing the clarity of the banner image.
However, you can override this restriction by overlaying your group banner with any number of images, including those that are animated.
You may view a basic example by clicking HERE.
To overlay animated images onto your banner, you must have the "announcement" module activated for your group, or at least one of the "custom HTML" modules. Then complete the following:
<div id="headerBannerContent"><p align="center"><img src="IMAGEURL" border="0" alt="" /></p></div>
NOTE: If you are familiar with HTML you may also include additional images, using margins or a basic table to designate exact positioning within your banner.
I am having a problem uploading videos. I have been trying for 4 days now. I've restarted and tried using AOL, IE, Firefox and Safari. Same thing happens - I upload a video, takes FOREVER. Then when it gets to 100% one of two things happen - it jumps back to 50% and keeps going in this loop or I get the browse button back. Any help?
I'll be doing a followup with everyone today to ensure they have received my mail messages, as it would appear that my mail glitch hasn't improved yet. It is very frustrating.
Hence, if you expected a mail message/reponse from me recently, and did not receive it, please let me know.
I left the following response for you earlier today on the other thread....
Connectivity issues (a poor/intermittent internet connection) will cause the problem you are experiencing.
Here's what I suggest:
1) Create a new test post with a short title and only a few words for the post/article body.
2) Publish this post to "Just Me" (privately).
3) Be as quick as you can, and spend as little time as possible in the editor.
Then let me know the result of your test. I can then advise you further.
Hang in there!
Hakuna Matata - everything is satisfactual today!
I suspect that the video is either too large, or not in the right format (the format may appear correct, but the video file was corrupted before or during the upload process).
If the file does not exceed the size limitation, then I would suggest trying to upload a video again that you have uploaded successfully in the past. Publish it to "Just Me", and see what happens. If unsuccessful, then update JAVA to the latest version.
Have you tried using another browser? ...and is the browser also updated to the latest version?
Yes, a banner must be 990 pixels wide by 220 pixels high. Using the technique above allows you to change your banner depending upon how (and where) a member is viewing it. It can appear differently for members when viewed on the group homepage than it does when viewing content in or through the group.
You can also add 'clickable' buttons to your group banner, which I'll cover later in the week.
I just uploaded 4 photos. After hitting 'continue', the page to add captions and tags had NO pictures(??) So I hit submit anyhow. On 'my photo' page were my name, date, but no pictures? So I had to delete each one cause there was nothing there. Any clues?
I'm going back now and try a single photo upload. Thanks.
So i've fully updated everything, tried a video that i've already uploaded and I got the same loop. 100% back down to 50%, for about 4 times and then the window closes.
I'm getting sad - anymore ideas?
If this happens in the future, try the following:
1) While displaying the 'photo', hold the CTRL key down while pressing the F5 key one time. This will display the photo/image from the server, instead of from your computer's memory.
2) If that doesn't help, restart your browser.
3) If your photos still will not display properly, then try switching browsers.
4) If none of the above work for you, then deactivate (temporarily) your internet firewall application...and possibly even your anti-virus software.
I hope that helps!
Here are some suggestions:
Please try the above and let me know if you notice any improvement.
I browned ham steaks, potatoes fried with red onions, eggs scrambled with bell pepper & onion and topped with shredded Gruyere cheese. And milk....not organic.
It is a pingalicious afternoon. You need to get out more. ;o)
Do I need to sign up for email notifications of my group for when posts or comments are left or is it automatically set up when you own a group?
My last comment was directed at the cat above you in this thread.
As for your question, you need to specifically elect to receive these notifications. I'll post some instructions below.
You may control the email settings for your group by visiting your email preferences page and scrolling down to the "My Groups" section.
Then, be certain that the option "new content or members in my group require approval" is selected. This will affect ALL groups you are the owner of.

To receive an email notification when new content is published (which you shouldn't require if you are moderating your group), scroll through the group list until you locate your new group. Check the boxes for the action you want to be notified of, and then save your changes.Thank You!
I sent you three messages today. Did you get them?
Clarification of the spamming questions I posed earlier: these are all in posts only.
1--is including the name of a group in the title of the post spamming?
2--is including a link for the group in posts spamming?
3--when launching a new group, is posting an article announcing the group spamming?
May your week be filled with laughter and love.
I am not available to elaborate at the moment...but in short, the answer to the above is NO.
I did get them (I think), but have not responded as of yet. I am still occupied elsewhere, but will return as soon as I can.
I have tried all of the above. It keeps coming back to the loop. I've even tried short 13 sec clips, the firewall is turned off tried it on AOL, Firefox and so on. I have no problem uploading pictures, just video.
I've updated every peice of software I can find, not sure if there is anything else we can do. But I'm still open for ideas if you have any.
Again I'm not site wizard or anything but that's my take. :-)
Due to the fact that you have updated all applications, turned off other applications, and attempted to upload videos that had uploaded previously, I'm inclined to believe that the problem may be related to your internet connection, or your Gather account.
To be safe, I would complete a Member Support form and report the problem to Gather. Then I would try the following:
1) Use another computer (if you have one available to you).
2) If you connect to the internet with a wireless connection, try connecting through the ethernet connection instead, bypassing your wireless modem.
3) Deactivate any unnecessary programs from your computer's start-up process. Then reboot.
None of the above are permanent solutions, just steps to help narrow down the cause of the problem.
I will try my older desktop PC tomorrow and see if that helps.
Kevin you have been fantastic thank you so much for your help and ideas. I always knew you were a smart wizard. ;-)
Going to contact Gather support now. :-)
What tag area/file are you referring to?
Tags are added for a variety of reasons. In some cases you can control these tags, and in some cases you cannot.
If you can tell me where the tags are appearing for you that you wish to change, perhaps I might be able to assist you in changing them.
Thanks!
I apologize for the delay in responding to your question. I was not available to provide answers at the time you posted your comment.
I'll post some suggestions for you in my next comment below...
Posting/publishing problems are often caused by a connectivity problem or a conflict with your computer in some way.
You can often minimize or eliminate these problems by following the steps below:
Please try the above and let me know if you notice any improvement.
