Photos Of A Working Surface Mine - The Beautiful & The Ugly Side Of Surface Mining

Each fall the surface coal mine that my husband works at has a day when the families of the employees can visit the mine.  We have a grill out with tons of food and can tour the mine.

We have always went and taken others who have never seen a surface mine before.  Last October we went and took our youngest daughter and her husband. He had never seen the large equipment nor the surface mine before.

After our visit I posted the photos that I took in 5 separate posts. They take you through each step of the mining process. The photos were all taken by me. I thought some of you may be interested to see what the mine that my husband works at is like.

There are some great photos of the equipment that is used as well as the mine in action.

These are great photos. Our country really depends on people like your husband, Connie. Do you worry about him? I understand that it's a fairly dangerous job.

You do have some great photos Connie....I remember looking at all of them. I hope Rodger isn't too worried about his job....I know Mike is getting a little more concerned with all the layoffs where he works.

We are very concerned about my husband's job. If the EPA does not approve permits soon he will be out of a job.

Deep mining is so much more dangerous but you are so correct coal mining is very dangerous work.

Thanks for the photos. I grew up in Arizona where there are some huge open pit copper mines. We've taken tours of them, the ore processing vats (danger, cyanide in some cases; lots of electrolytic processing, too), and much older, deep gold mines. The equipment is awe inspiring and the danger is significant. These mines go in and out of operation depending on the price of copper. On the other hand, the cleanest air we ever saw in town while I was a kid is when the smelters were shut down for economic reasons.
