I need help in identifying this bird. It's a woodpecker I know that because he was taking the food from my feeder then going up into the tree and pecking the seeds into a hole.
I don't know much about woodpeckers. I have been trying to get a good picture of one that has been making a hole in a cactus a few blocks from my house. So far he flys away every time I get close.
Without a reference to determine size, it's hard to tell a photo of a downy from a hairy. We sometimes have a downy on one side and a hairy on the other side of a suet cake! Then it's very obvious which is which.
