A "Tea Party" (Taxed Enough Already) was held in the town of Riverhead, on April 15th, at 6 PM in the evening, right next to our historic waterfront. The tea party was sponsored by the "American Family Association." Another group was also having a tea party at 7 PM on the other side of the parking lot. With signs and flags in hand we gathered around the two farm tractors and symbolically dumped tea bags into a large tea cup. Why didn't we dump them into the river? In the first place dumping tea into a river is no longer considered environmentally friendly, not only is that against the nature of those who love the town and the historic riverfront, but the last thing we needed was a potentially hostile press going "off message" by concentrating on the environmental impact and not the nature of the protest. In addition, during these times of economic recession, it was felt that giving the tea bags to senior centers would be the proper thing to do.

I hoped you enjoyed this photo essay. I really wanted to add them to my photo album but Gather has been rather naughty of late, so whatever works.

But has he really lowered taxes? (Point of fact he has lowered withholding, not taxes, but that’s a different argument.) How are we going to pay for all the PORK that the president has approved, both in terms of “stimulus” that won’t even start to go into effect until after the economy recovers and in terms of new government programs that will continue to spend huge sums of money for as long as they can manage to continue to exist? We either increase the deficit (we won’t pay but our grandchildren will and with interest) or we print more money (causing inflation which is a tax on rich and poor alike). Then what about the proposed carbon taxes? What about the taxes required to pay for his health care plan? And so on and so forth?
But this isn’t just a federal thing, and it’s not a federal thing. In New York, we already taxed enough as it is, but they want to throw on a number of new taxes. They want to make people who don’t use the rails to pay for them. They want to eliminate property tax breaks for retired people on fixed incomes (the STAR program). Not to mention that all that stimulus money coming into the state has enough strings to cause increased state spending for decades, and all of that has to be paid somehow; unlike the federal government the state just can’t print more money!
Great photo essay and great explanation. I wish more people would understand that all this spending the government is doing is affecting us and will continue to affect us for years.
The debt has increased to trillions of dollars in the last few months. Who's going to pay for that? And who is going to pay for all the programs and bailouts that are coming our way? There are not that many rich people in this country to cover this debt. We're all going to pay. We are paying right now as the value of the dollars we do have left in our pockets goes down as the federal government keeps printing more money without backup.
This is a gamble. I try to keep in mind the early 90s, when government almost screeched to a stop and everyone was saying "it's the economy, stupid." That wasn't as bad as it is now, but we did come out of it. I just think we have to give these programs time before everyone starts accusing Obama of some kind of horrible secret intention. He's got two little girls of his own, and he's trying to protect their future. Seems like the media start whipping everyone into a fever when we need calm judgment.
But, believe me, I sympathize. We're retired, and we're in serious trouble unless things turn around. We planned and saved, and it's gone down the drain.
I am not happy with the way Obama is bailing out the banks and I'm very unhappy he has not kept his campaign promise of helping the average worker by building from the bottom up. His statements concerning people captured in our ongoing wars is very disturbing.
I would like to see the present party of no actually come up with some ideas. Until they do, I will view the GOP as the Grand Obstructionist policy and vote only for Democrats. I'm just sick of the sniping and the undermining of our Democracy by falsehoods and fact twisting by Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and others. Such divisive words that only tear down are simply that of evil in my opinion.
As far as the Stimulus bill. Six of the biggest earmarks were given to GOP representatives!!! Fair and balanced reporting is needed and not just sick partisan finger pointing. I really thought triple the amount for our infrastructure was needed.
I know God will not bless our nation as long as we just point accusatory fingers with no viable solutions.
I am going to defend Fox, (and really this is really weird, I don’t watch Fox) because, as far as I am concerned, lies and fact twisting has been the domain of the great liberal networks (MSNBC, and CNN) for years. Through omission and through cut and paste they have made all those who oppose their agenda morons and has managed to gift wrap fluff pieces to their friends. No wonder why they are so scared of Fox that they constantly attack the news network. No wonder indeed that on the day of the tea party, Fox managed to get more watchers than the other major networks combined. Even my favorite liberal news organization, NPR, blew the reporting of the tea parties big time. (Fortunately for NPR its listeners managed to point out NPR’s liberal bias on the coverage, something that the MSM would never admit, even when the evidence is overwhelming. Fox actually had better coverage of Hillary Clinton than either MSNBC or CNN.)
Hey Chris...you're not getting fragged for being at a racist, anti CNN, anti government event? What's up with that?
Great stuff. So far the increasing anger is peaceful. I hope the dimbulbs in DC/the media start to realize its very deep and belittling or ignoring it is not going to help. This is the first time I've seen non progs/lefties publicly protest in large numbers anything, that in itself is a good sign.
