Do you know where your New Year Resolutions are?  If you answer in the affirmative, with a resounding "Yes," congratulations!  The good news is that you have reason to be proud.  You have likely made progress on priorities in your life.  You are also in the minority because most folks abandon their resolutions within weeks or months of making New Year promises.

Whether you have nurtured your resolutions, or given up on them, Spring is a wonderful season to hit the'reset' button on your life.  Pump some new energy into the things you would truly love to see, do, be, achieve, learn, feel, and experience in 2009.  Consider all that you can accomplish in the next nine months if you set your mind to it right now, build a plan around specific, measureable goals, and take small, consistent steps each and every day.  You don't have to move mountains overnight, but you do have to dig a spade full of dirt every single day . . . Why not pick up the shovel and string together 30 back-to-back victories - small daily steps - for the next month?

Join I Resolve To . . . Group members for a 'Spring Resolution' Chat on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. (ET).  The chat will be hosted by me and Gather's Jennifer Hodge.  Come toot your horn a little bit about what has worked for you, what you have achieved, and what you would love to achieve in 2009.  If you have run into obstacles, we want to hear about them.  If you are looking for Gather buddies to team up with, let's roll up our sleeves and get to work - brainstorm some new strategies and meet some new friends with whom we can share the journey.  Just showing up is half the battle!  If you haven't joined I Resolve To . . . at Gather, do so today by clicking this link:  I Resolve To . . . Group at Gather.

Remember:  I Resolve To . . . Achieve My New Year Resolutions, One Resolution, One Day At A Time For One Year.  It's your choice.  Do it today. Turn your resolution into reality in five simple, common sense steps:  Dare To Dream, Decide, Define, Develop A Plan, and Do It Daily. Make your resolution a permanent Lifetime Resolution, something that's with you for good!  Above all, Be A Resolutionista, someone who makes resolutions, keeps resolutions, and enjoys the journey!  Let's Go For It!

Another great post. I like the idea of giving yourself to start fresh again. Spring is such a positive season for me.

(More good news, another one of my plays is a finalist in a competition!)

Hi all! I would like to thank Kim for inviting me to co-host this chat. I think that we all lead super stressful lives trying to juggle family and work that we often overlook ourselves and our goals. Kim is here to talk with you and help us get ourselves on track!

Thank you for joining the I Resolve To . . . Spring Resolution Chat this evening. First off, I want to thank Gather's, Jennifer Hodge for Co-Hosting the chat.

Second - I want to focus our discussion just a little bit around a few ideas. The purpose tonight is to infuse some new 'Spring' energy into our resolutions and goals. I'd like to talk about what's working and what's not working - toot our horns a little bit about progress, and discuss strategies for overcoming obstacles. I read all the daily posts from folks who are working on a wide array of goals and I know I'm inspired by every one of your successes.

Let's begin by talking about the resolutions that we made, or plan to make . . . how's it going?

Kim, I'm wondering if you can talk briefly about the pitfalls we get into when making resolutions. Do we make too many? Expect too much of ourselves?

My resolutions involved getting my plays out into the world.

I also want to lose weight.

My third resolution is to de-clutter our house.

I'm doing well on the first two, not so well on the last.

Hi guys - I am here! I'm glad I found Kim's site and was pleased to realize that I am a revolutionista...

I have never been good with resolutions - I've purchased many exercise videos/DVDs and many sit still unopened under my bed :(

So a few years ago I decided that I was going to set one manageable goal (resolution) and complete it and then regroup and set another.

So this year I decided I had to get my book published ... well in February I received great news and have a publisher.

Two top pitfalls are trying to tackle too many big resolutions/goals at one time and making resolutions/goals that you really don't want to do, but feeel you should do.

If you really want to succeed choose a few things that you truly want to do - Ashley for instance is really committed to her work outs and has done a fabulous job. Trish, meanwhile, is having huge success marketing her wonderful plays.

Well...in previous years my resolutions have been about giving something up, but this year ny goal is to move forward with my writing. I was on a little hiatus - not feeling creative - and I'm taking small steps to get it back. eg - writing a 30 word or less poem each day. How hard could it be to write 30 words?

I agree with the one (big) goal rule - it's really hard to focus on a lot of big things at once. I think folks are much more successful when they're working on one big goal and a few small ones . . . that's an important point, Jan.

Ashley, I'm no expert like Kim, but from personal experience, I have found that making a comprehensive list for clutter clearing room by room and setting aside 15 minutes a day to tackle this behemoth project, I made headway. That was a run on sentence. But truly, it felt great to 1) check off each room as I finished it and 2) give stuff back to the universe that I didn't use, but that I knew somebody else would.

Ashley - how do you keep yourself motivated? I found when I belonged to a gym and worked full time it was easy for me to leave work and head strait to the gym. I was in much better shape then.

Now that I work from home and am forty it's really tough for me to keep at exercise.

Jennifer, I have also tried the 15 minutes a day. My difficulty is to keep up with my writing, marketing, submission and presentation of my plays it seems to take the bulk of my limited energy. I just ended leading a seminar so I hope I will get back to de-cluttering.

Trish, Congrats on the weight loss. I just turned 40 and that was a metabolism eye opener, let me tell you! I adopted a "I'm going to eat until I'm full and then stop" mantra. It was soooo hard because I live to eat. Love cooking! Love eating out! And it has been difficult when eating out. But I've gone down four sizes!

Jennifer that's a great idea - we (all four in the family) are pack rats. My husband is horrible - my neighbor will set stuff out with "free" signs and he'll bring them across the street to the garage/shop.

It was wonderful to have space when we bought our house with a 1500 sq. ft. detatched garage shop - but it's really gotten us into a clutter mess!

I'm in the process of doing that exact drill with my clutter Jennifer - I find that I don't have a couple days to set aside (like I would prefer because I really do enjoy cleaning). So I am working room by room, closet by closet. It is wonderful when you can check each one off! :)

My main motivation is my goal of becoming a personal trainer. I really need to be in top-shape to successfully motivate others.

Before that, when I was losing mass quantities of weight, my motivation was harder to come by. After a while though, I became used to working out everyday and found that I did not feel right if I skipped more than the occasional day. I fell in love with exercise, weight loss became my by-product instead of vice versa.

Congrats Jennifer on going down four sizes!!! YEAH...

I really need to get back to it! I had lost 25 lbs. and have gained about 8 back. It's finally getting a little nicer here in the Seattle area so I'm more inspired to walk. My hubby and I took a nice long walk last night with our pup.

It's hard for me to keep inspired when it's rainy & overcast/cloudy

To stick with my exercise program I schedule it in 3-5 days each week and work to do different things - some days a long walk is just right, other days it's my indoor bike, and sometimes it's gardening or swimming. For me, variety is key. But I'm with Ashley - I fell in love with sports and exercise. Weight control and good health are definitely by-products of having a positive focus on exercise.

Don't forget, too, that when you clutter clear, you can have a garage/yard sale, ebay it, or if you are in an urban area put things on craigslist. That means money in your pocket. Or you can donate to the Salvation Army, Goodwill, church or non profit of your choice. Whatever you do, it's a win win!

Unless it is of great sentimental value, my philosophy is 'If I haven't worn it or used it in the past year, it's going out to the universe."

I'm a lister too! When I was teaching at the community college - I made post it lists all over my computer monitor and desk. Occasionally I would rub against one and have it on my hip or sweater when I headed to the class room, so my students teasedme about them :o)

I'm a pack rat too - but I really need to adopt your philosphy Jennifer and get rid of stuff that I am not using. It's hard, but I'm determined to get my clutter under control. I actually have confined clutter to just a couple places in the house, which has been a good start.

You are definitely right about donations being a win-win, Jennifer. I have donated so many business cast-offs to Goodwill over the past several months. It feels great to get the clutter out of the house and pass it on to someone else. I have even found myself able to part with things I once thought I would want to keep forever. Sentiments change with time.

I think I'll get some stars - it might help my kids too. Maybe I'll make a chart or calendar to hang on the fridge and when I do things and the kids do things we'll get stars.

One of the auction houses I used to frequent is having one soon - i told my husband we need to load up a trailer and take items over there. Because we still have some commercial kitchen appliances from a restaurant I sold over a year ago.

Keep us posted on your writing progress Susan - there are actually a number of writers in the group, some (like Jan) who have sold books or are in the process of selling them. You're sure to get some good writing tips if you reach out . . .

You know, I think I have stars leftover from one of my daughters school projects. (My youngest is 25 now!) I'll dig them out and use them and that will clean some clutter. Do you put the stars on a calendar or in your journal Kim?

I have a small to moderate amount of business start-up debt, Kelly, and I always make sure to congratulate myself for even paying an extra $5.00 on it a month!

Kelly, Congrats! I think we should all pat ourselves on the back for the headway we are making!

Kim, Like Kelly, I too have accumulated debt. My parents didn't really understand credit card debt themselves so I never learned about it until it was too late. Any suggestions on how to organize and set goals in this area? I'm even too afraid to get a credit check. LOL.

My husband had to make a 25% cut in pay and I'm not working so I'm trying to reduce how much we spend. So I'm making a new resolution to try to make meals at home (we like to eat out) and try to make them for $5-$10 per meal.

So I'm becoming a coupon cutter and I'm actually using them!

That's great about the weight loss Kelly . . . what kinds of work outs are you doing? Sounds like you've been really motivated. I find that I'm always spurred onward by progress with my goals . . . especially exercise. It makes me feel great and I crave it when I don't exercise for a couple days.

@ Trish

You are soooo right! I just have found myself getting to about 30-50 pages on several stories and hitting a wall, so I know I need to do more planning instead of just letting the words flow.

We have way more debt than I ever wanted too! It's easy to learn to spend what you make - so it's harder to cut back when it's forced upon you!

Susan - I'm not good about making the chats because of the time difference - but NoWhineJustChampagne is a great group here on Gather ... many of us are now published! And we werent' when we first started! Check it out. Pat Bertram is the leader

Jennifer, we have debt due to medical expenses and the loss of my income. We chop away at it every month and both celebrate.

I did watch Susy Orman on Oprah the other day and she has reversed her thoughts on paying down debt now. She said now we need to be saving money because credit will dry up. We're still trying to pay down debt while stashing a bit of money in savings. We were thankful this month since we had to pay taxes.

I admire all of you who can write, last year I took a English comp class at the community college and it would take me days to do a 3 page essay.

I'm working on debt reduction (renovations to my house). But one of the things that I have heard the experts say about debt reduction is to start with the smallest debt (or credit card amount) first. Pay it off then move on to the next one.

The first step for any goal is to make a decision to 'do it'. Second step is to define what you want to do and educate yourself about all the 'To Do's'. I did this last fall with my own debt reduction and built a plan that I'm still working on.

One part of my plan is to simply 'stop buying stuff that I don't need'. It's amazing how much stuff we buy that we don't really need. I transferred my credit card balance to a zero interest credit card. And I reviewed all of my spending and cut the fat.

Susan, one suggestion on avoiding hitting the wall with your writing is to stop when you still have ideas and then when you start up the next day you know where you're going on your writing.

Jan, I used to spend $3 a day on coffee going into work and $7 on lunch and I realized how much it added up! I try to pack a lunch and the money that I am saving is amazing.

This is great Kim ... we should do it again! I think these kinds of chats are great just for motivation!

I'm going to have to head out to pick my son up from track practice and grab some fresh brocolli to finish up dinner!

Thanks guys ... I'll check back later tonight and read for more great ideas.

KEEP BEING REVOLUTIONISTAS!!

I have been listening to the Dave Ramsey show on the internet he encourages living a debt free life style even to the point of paying off your mortgage. That is what I am aiming for.

Jennifer, I did that too . . . bought coffee and lunch on the days I spent with clients. I'm saving money every time I walk out the door now because I'm packing a lunch and carrying my handy little travel mug. Those 10.00 lunches really add up!

I think one thing that we shouldn't skimp on, especially with the economy the way it is, is to pamper ourselves in creative and inexpensive ways. This means creating quality time whether it is playing a board or card game with our families or just taking a well deserved bubble bath while reading a mindless book.
