In honor of Earth Day, the kids and I planted a tree! We would like to start of by thanking Gather and Home Depot for our tree, Gather sent us a $25 Home Depot gift card and that was enough to pay for our entire tree and a candy bar to share!
Tuesday after school the kids and I took Our Earth Day trip to Home Depot! We had a wonderful time and looked at lots of great plants, shrubs and pretty flowers. In the end, they chose a cherry tree!
We didn't get a chance to plant our tree on Tuesday night because we had gymnastics class and didn't get home until almost 7:00. Then it was time to take a bath and get ready for bed.
So, Wednesday after school there was soccer practice for both Chandler and Stephy. I couldn't make them wait another day to plant their tree, so we came home after soccer practice, ate dinner and then went outside to plant our tree.
We had the perfect spot for our cherry tree, out back close to our apple tree. We already had a raised cement block decorative ring in place, we had a tree there a few years ago but it died and was never replaced.
This particular type of cherry tree is self-fertile and therefore does not need to be planted with a pollinator tree. Which was important because although we have an apple tree - this will be our only cherry tree. Now we have one apple tree and one cherry tree!
Chandler and Stephy had a blast picking out a tree and even more fun planting it. They are already asking when they can plant another tree, it's something we will do again very soon.
I had no idea that planting a tree would be so much fun for the kids, we planted two weeping willows last year and they weren't all that interested in helping. Maybe the fact that they got to go shopping and choose this tree made the difference.
The kids did everything: from transporting the tree with their wagon to digging the hole to filling in the hole. The only thing I didn't let them do was apply the fertilizer.
They planted this tree with love and I can't wait to watch it grow with our family.
Team work is always best...

This is the perfect spot...

Let's get the shovels and Miracle Gro...

Now it's time to dig...

A little more digging...

Just a little more...

Now it's time to add the cherry tree and cover it with dirt...

Add a few 'special' touches...

Let's not forget the 'vitamins'...

We did it, we planted a tree...

And they planted it with lots of love...

A special THANK YOU to Gather for choosing us to receive a Home Depot gift card for this special Earth Day project.
Happy Earth Day!

They fooled me I thought they would pick an apple tree.
Kirk,
We have 5 acres - so we have lots of room for more trees! Can never have too many trees!

what kind of cherry did you plant?
I didn't know that about the flowers! They chose a tart cherry. There was one other type of cherry tree but they liked the picture on this one better! LOL!
It usually takes a cherry tree to become fully mature. Your kids looked like they enjoyed planting this tree.
