Welcome to the HelpCenter™!

The original Gather help series -- assisting members since 2006.
Need a little help, or have a question?
Can't find something? ...or figure out how something works?
Ask other members!

"I will be publishing a series of travel posts and I would like to add a sidebar or call-out box that will have facts and statistics relating to the area I'm traveling in. What is the easiest way to do this on Gather?"Adding creative elements to articles/posts can be difficult with Gather's limited formatting capabilities. While a vast array of options are readily available, these often require knowledge of HTML (a programming language) or other advanced techniques.
Ok... but how difficult is it to add one of these?
Not hard at all! -- If you know how to copy & paste, then you have all the skill you need to add this feature to your post with only a few clicks of your mouse.
Get yours today! ...click the desired color below and then follow the simple instructions provided.
Look for additional call-out boxes coming soon, including:
...among several other unique designs!
My laptop hard drive died and I lost my cheat sheet of clickable links for comments. Would you please send me the info I need to do clickable links in comments. Thank you!
Look for it soon in your inbox (Gather Mail).
Thanks for letting me know about the "rewind" button. I know what happened and I'll fix it shortly. As for the new banner ad, the speed is intentional.
Is the group still appearing in your "private group" listing when you publish, or is it not showing up at all as a group you can publish to?
It appears that your first problem has been resolved, in that you can now access DN's group.
There are many factors that can influence the uploading of videos to Gather.
Here is what I suggest...do you have a short video that you were able to successfully upload to Gather previously?
Can you try to upload it again to "Just Me"?
The results of the above will help me to isolate the cause of the problem for you.
I tried to sign up for the hints & tips, but can't tell if it worked, as no acknowledgment appeared. . . .
Thanks.
I sent the information this morning through Gather mail. If you did not receive it, please let me know.
As soon as you click the button to sign up, you become a member of a group established specifically to receive the daily tips through the Gather mail system. You will see a message on the right-hand side of the page that informs you that you are now a member of the group. That is the only acknowledgment you will receive (until you begin receiving the daily tip). You also will not be able to publish to the group, so it won't appear in your group list when you publish.
If you don't begin receiving the daily tip beginning tomorrow, please let me know.
When you view your list of videos on the site, does the private ("Just Me") video appear in your listing?
The problem you are experiencing can be caused by an unstable connection to Gather, or by reduced browser resources. The former is more likely however.
I will return shortly with a list of recommendations for you.
Your problem is also likely related to reduced browser resources or other conflicts. I'll post a comment below for you after I address Marsha's problem above.
Gather will occasionally make changes to the site that we are completely unaware of. These changes affect the underlying or back-end processes that allow the site to function. Sometimes these changes will have an impact on you and your computer setup. That is why something will suddenly stop working for you one day, when it worked well the day before.
Of course, the opposite is true too...in that one day you may finally be able to do something you haven't been able to before.
There are some steps you can take to be ready for these changes, and to minimize future problems.
I'll list those in my next comment....
We did it!
Moments ago, on a 219 to 212 vote, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the landmark American Clean Energy and Security Act, the most important environmental and energy legislation in our nation's history.
Environmental Defense Action Fund and our broad network of members, activists and strategic partners played a huge role in pushing this bill over the to

Here is what I suggest you do...
a) Clear your temporary internet files (cache & cookies).
b) Restart your browser.
c) SIGN OUT of Gather using the SIGN OUT link at the top of any page.
d) SIGN IN to Gather again, but be certain you have the "Keep me signed in" box checked on the sign-in page.
e) Try to upload again.
If you don't experience an improvement, then try the following:
1) Update your browser to the latest version.
2) Update JAVA to the latest version.
3) Reboot your computer.
Then see if uploading is easier/improved immediately after you can access Gather again.
If not, turn off (temporarily) your internet firewall and ant-virus applications, then try again.
Please let me know how it's going...!
Here is what I recommend for your problem:
a) Clear your temporary internet files (cache & cookies).
b) Restart your browser.
If you don't experience an improvement, then try the following:
1) Update your browser to the latest version (NOT version 8.0 though, unless you want to).
2) Update JAVA to the latest version.
3) Update FLASH to the latest version.
4) Reboot your computer.
If that doesn't help, or have additional questions, please let me know....as there are a few extra steps you can take to minimize these problems.
In Internet Explorer, you would clear cache on the same screen where you clear your cookies. Basically, just choose to delete all temporary files and it will take care of both. If you get stuck, let me know.
Hmmmm... I'm showing it as sent.
Evidently my mail problems have returned.
I'll send it again shortly...!
However, you can override this default by adding a simple parameter to the YouTube embed code.
Here's How:
You may also have your video loop continually within the post by adding the following parameter:
&loop=1
You can choose to enter the loop parameter on its own, or combine it with the autoplay option, like this:
&autoplay=1&loop=1
Want to add some quick background music or sound effects to your post or group? ...shrink the size of any YouTube video and activate the loop and autoplay options. Videos can be scaled to a very small size which can render them (almost) invisible.
Notes:
I see you already found the information...!
Just stopping by to see what's up. I'm still wondering (but will look back and see if it's on another day), how to make a darned banner.
I do have another question, though. Can you (I can't find it), when making a new group, have the owner and a moderator. I don't see anyplace that I can set that, though I keep finding things on the group set-ups that I didn't know were there. Any help is appreciated.
Marilyn (have a great day)
Thanks for all you do Kevin
