I am disappointed that the First Family did not end up adopting the First Dog. Instead, they made a donation to the DC Humane Society. That's not quite the same.

Purebreds don't often get sent to shelters and they could only have the water dog or a labradoodle due to allergies from one of the girls.
I think the donation was a nice gesture and it'll be used well.
A poodle (which is at my son's school and he does NOT have an allergic reaction to despite other dogs giving him one) and Bichon Frische.
I'm horrid around dogs with allergies. I've loved on a bichon frische and not one sniffle. There are hypoallergenic dogs.
Just because you don't take the dog out of the shelter does not mean you are not helping a dog that needs it. As it was, none of the shelters here would let us adopt because we lived too close to a main street and had more than one child in the house.
All our dogs are loved and all of them live good lives and thankfully, none of them ever had to be placed in a shelter to get where they have been.
Personally, I don't care if the Obama's dog was a shelter dog or not. It was an admirable goal, but as parents, they need to make the best decision for their kids. I was happy that he made a donation to the local shelter and hope others will follow!
Give them a break!

Thanks for posting To Points For Pleasure Place!!!
Also, I wouldn't consider a mixed breed for the most part because I don't know what I'm getting--what problems are coming to the forefront?
They mad a decison that the whole family could live with.
