Earth Day is coming up on Wednesday, April 22nd. Earth Day is celebrated April 22nd every single year and is held to promote awareness of environmental issues. The first Earth Day was in 1970. It was created so there would be more awareness about the need to clean up the Earth. It raises awareness about the Earth's condition and it encourages people to reduce their pollutants and recycle more. The idea is to make this planet better for this generation and others to come and participate in an attempt to make our global environment better. Everyone is supposed to turn of their lights for atleast one hour in honor of Earth Day.
Last week, I came across the following article: Celebrate Earth Day on Gather! Win a $25 Home Depot Gift Card and Plant Your Own Sapling with Your Kids! by Stefanie Plum, Gather Partner Team
I made the following comment on that article and I was one of the 10 lucky Gather members to win!
Why you want to plant a tree sapling with your kids?
Because my kids love planting things and watching them grow! Plus, not only is it a great learning experience for my kids and something fun for us to do together, it's great for the environment. I don't think there can ever be too many trees, trees and beauty to their surroundings!
Every spring the kids and I plany flowers in pots, tomatoes on the deck, sunflowers and a garden! It's something we've done for years and something we look forward to each year.
We planted a couple weeping willows last year. The kids help dig the hole, messy kids! Then they thought it was so special that they got to water it every single day. They took pride in that responsibility. They were almost positive that it grew each day because of their water, so cute!
We would love to plant another tree this year. Anything I can to with my children that teaches them a life lesson and it's fun - I'm all in!
Yesterday after picking Chandler up from school, the kids and I made a trip to Home Depot. On the drive there, Chandler said that all he wanted to get was a cherry tree. Stephy said all she wanted to get was a leafy bush.
We browsed around, up and down each aisle, walking very slowly so we wouldn't miss anything. They looked at everything from flowers to shrubs to trees.
The kids were SO excited to be shopping and picking out something to plant, the decision was all theirs. After 35 minutes, they finally made their decision. I loaded it into the cart and they pushed the cart to the checkout and even paid for it with the gift card all by themselves.
After paying for their new tree, there was exactly enough money left on the gift card for them to buy a candy bar to share - that was an added bonus for them.
The tree they chose is actually one of their favorite fruits! They are SO excited about it! So, do you want to know what kind of tree they picked out? I'm going to make you wait... (watch for the article of them planting the tree for the answer)

There were so many choices...

We walked up and down every aisle...

Then it was out to the trees...

Shopping for trees is hard work, time for a rest...

I think we have a winner...

Waiting in line to checkout...

Still waiting...

My little tree huggers (LOL)...

cant wait to see it planted!!
I'm going to guess that you bought an apple tree.
You're right about one thing - it IS a fruit tree, but not an apple tree!
Thanks everyone!
Thanks for sharing.
Hmmmmm, it's been guessed!
What, don't you think we can grow peach trees here in North Idaho? HUH?
Thanks for the laugh!
I always associate Idaho with just potatoes. And Georgia with peaches. PA...well, we have some great raspberries.
Can't wait to see the planting essay!!
Idaho Potatoes
The Georgia Peach
I think they picked an apple tree.
thank you for sharing with new stuff
Good choice on the cherry tree, I love mine (and so do the birds around here in the summer, i have to be quick to get any cherries haha)
As a kid I remember going to my grandparents orchard and picking apples, pears and plums. Now my brother owns that property and my kids get to pick fruit in the same orchard!
cherry trees are nice, my sweet cherry is in bloom right now, last year it had 2 cherries on it :( the bark on that one you have in the buggy looks like an apple
I can't wait to get blooms and cherries on our tree!
I wonder if they make genetic franken-trees that are half one type of fruit tree, and half another.
Wouldn't it be cool to have an Apple-Cherry Tree? ahaha
Remember if it comes out after this comment I thought of it first and I will demand my cut of the profits :0)
My husband says we have too many trees already, so we won't be planting one this year. I'm not going to argue with him, since he's the one that has to mow around the seven (I think) trees that we already have. ;) We live in town, so our yard isn't all that big, and they aren't all together or anything.
