New Neighbor

My daughter went out for a walk this evening, and found a new neighbor had moved into the neighborhood......I'm glad she didn't step on him! He was hanging out right by my car. It's the first time since I've been coming to Fort Myers (18 years) that I have EVER seen a snake down here!

Scary, the weather must be forcing them to cruise for their next meal. We had a snake bite a Lab in our neighborhood about a week ago. Be careful please!

What kind of snake is it? I don't think we have any around here (MO) that are quite that colorful.

I think I prefer my field mouse...tho someone (John Beck, maybe) told me snakes are better mousers than cats! I grew up with rattlesnakes...so I am very respectful of what slithers and shakes like a snake.

I have lived in and around Fort Myers for 4 years now. I have seen plenty of snakes..big ones little ones....all different colors. I guess that is what I get for living not to far from the river. Lol. But I also go places where I might see them and walk slowly. So, I tend to notice things others don't.

Our only experience with a snake in the 12 years we have lived in Florida was in our first home. We had a washer and dryer in our garage. One day the dryer would not work, it would not turn. My husband went in and pulled out what he thought was electric cord that was stuck around the drum. Evidently a snake went into the dryer to get warm and died, blocking the drum from moving. Was he surprised and was I ever grossed out.

Because of the drought in Florida more animals are seeking water and going into different areas. It is a time to keep a watchful eye out. In my neighborhood there are alligators that are in the water areas, so most keep their dogs on leashes.

I'm with Minipin on this one, that it's a corn snake, which is a useful fellow. But I'd consult my brother Brian the herpetologist to make sure. How he ever got into studying poisonous snakes is a mystery to me. You should check out that A&E show 'The Exterminators' which is set in Louisiana and has tons of critters like this. I think next week they're battling bald-faced hornets, which we also have around here. Thanks for posting this and definitely watch where you walk!

I don't see too many, but I find their skins everywhere, especially around the pool area. During the summer, we get black snakes in the pool every once in a while.

My aunt in California had a rattler in their car engine. I don't remember how they got rid of it, may be the shot it. But they definitely had to kill it. Another aunt in NM had a rattler in their home. They had to kill it, too. I only saw a rattler once. In Arches, in Utah. My dad, fool that he was sometimes, was teasing it with a stick. We only had shorts on. Good thing it was a young and foolish rattler. It went away. Otherwise not all of us 4 would have survived.
