If the total failure of the Bush administration did not convince you of the utter bankruptcy of the Republican party, you are likely to be convinced by the series of hysterical circus sideshows offered by the GOP in an attempt to "gain traction".
Although voters are sceptical of some Obama administration positions, the President's personal popularity continues to soar. Confidence in "the direction the country is headed" has risen steadily since Bush was booed from the national stage. The GOP has tried to build a winning campaign on voter uneasiness, but each effort backfires as the wacko GOP "base" frightens away any potential recruits.
The most recent example of a serious mistep by the GOP is the much-hyped "Tea Parties" for which a cabal of right wingnuts are shilling in an attempt to create some effective opposition to the Obama Recovery Plan.
"Spontaneous" meetings have been announced in cities across America in the days leading up to April 15 in order to "protest" the growth of "Big Government" and the alleged enlargement of federal powers. The lack of specificity in this hypocritical "mobilization" (not a single promoter of these events ever raised a single discouraging word about the unconstitutional expansion of Executive Power under Dear Leader Bush II) is one of the causes of its downfall.
As the party of old, angry, southern, white males, The GOP resembles nothing so much as a bunch of whining losers who are frustrated that the cool kids ignore them. "Why don't people understand that our religious and free-market fundamentalism will lead to the Golden Age?", they piss and moan.
Consequently, the "Tea Parties" have attracted every nutcase with a grudge, grievance, or conspiracy to come forth and be heard. Videos of these meetings are now making the rounds of the blogsphere.
Here is one example of the "winning coalition" assembled for a "Tea Party".
The speakers announce the introduction of digital TV as "brainwashing", oppose the flouridation of water as a Communist plot, encourage parents to keep their kids out of college, and enthusiastically cheer a demand for book-burning.
John Birchers, Neo-nazis, nativist know-nothings, confederacy-apologists (who often overlap with other categories here), and survivalists have become the spokespersons for this 'movement".
If there were more of them, it would be alarming.
As it is, the videos are hysterical.
The spectacle continues to alienate voters from the Republican Party. Glen Beck is a brilliant agent for the Democratic Party.

How do you know we weren't?
Will it be Bobby "Not ready for prime time" Jindahl, or one of the other two prominent governors who took "brave" stances against receiving any stimulus cash, because they suddenly found fiscal principles, after 28 years of driving this nation into the debt toilet?
Nope, because every one of the three losers that took that stand have since had to cave in to pressure from their state's constituents and legislators. No surprise, of course. How stupid would they have to be to turn away free money when they literally have people living in their states that are starving?
So, instead of looking like the valiant warriors of the new republican party, they look like the clueless bafoons that they really are, and once again, they've shown the American public that the republican party just simply cannot lead. They are losers.
They have nothing at this point, but hatred of gays, gun worship, and fearmongering, all of which the vast majority of the country has simply grown bored with, after 28 years of it.
Another thing that's really kicking the hell out of this lifeless walking corpse of a political party is that progressives actually finally have a voice in the mainstream media, so they can't get away with their blatant, outright lies like they used to. Remember how it was, before AAR came along?
Anything that any of these diabological manipulators blurted out got repeated ad nauseum on the "liberal media," without anyone ever once standing up to counter with facts. Well, that's not the case anymore. Now, the progressive media voice that was so fractured and marginalized in 2003 has become focused and driven, and has even found its way to mainstream television, where shows like Countdown and Rachel Maddow are receiving glowing reviews and gathering very large audiences each night.
The rightwing echo machine has effectively been short circuited by progressive voices that are finally exposing the endless stream of rightwing lies. So, while the party lies in waste after getting their asses handed to them in the past two elections, after the worst president in US history just got through destroying this nation, the rational thinking conservatives have finally left the party, and what remains is nothing short of a laughing stock parade of freaks.
Oh yes, let's go for another round of tax cuts for millionaires! By golly, there's a plan that's really worked out well over the past 28 years, hasn't it?
Got a war to fight? Cut taxes on millionaires.
Got global warming? Cut taxes on millionaires.
Got millions of jobs being shipped overseas? Cut taxes on millionaires.
Got broken roads and bridges? Cut taxes on millionaires.
Got schools falling apart? Cut taxes on millionaires.
Economy going great? Cut taxes on millionaires.
Economy in the shitter? Cut taxes on millionaires.
Fatcat CEOs destroying the financial system? Cut taxes on millionaires.
Got illegal immigration problems? Cut taxes on millionaires.
Got a healthcare system on the verge of collapsing our economy? Cut taxes on millionaires.
These people simply have nothing. The republican party is a party that was built entirely on fraud, deception, hatred, bigotry, intolerance, and fear, and the American public has finally figured it out and wants nothing more to do with it. Thank God.
I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that the criminal mastermind behind the evil 50-year plan is revealed to be of the group of people who are the usual suspects when it comes to world domination.
I have found myself entranced by a particular blog that has a sharp sarcastic tongue, the kind dear to my heart. Blanca DeBree. Her blog today was coincidentally on tea bagging, but this one is still my favorite: The Culture War Is Lost; Get Rapture Ready
Lots of laughs here, Peter. Loved the comments as well.
Makes me feel a little less embarrassed by Canadian politickies.
I fear that, because they're so absurd, we'll begin to ignore these twits (I couldn't watch that whole thing), and somebody with a brain will sneak in and start making that party functional again. And we won't notice until it's too late. Remember, every so often the really, really rich get together and buy themselves an election.
I think these people have watched the sci-fi movie "They" with Rowdy Roddny(sp) Piper one to many times. "I've come here to kick ass and chew bubble gum. And I'm all out of bubble gum."
His logic?
1) Bring your kids home from college. The colleges are brainwashing them.
2) Burn the books--all books. Especially the ones that teach evolution.
3) (and I like this one the best...) Stop paying taxes. We're not going to support the government anymore.
I'm with E.O. And they still walk among us. They look almost normal. They sound like spit and fury--and blathering ignorance. Keep ignorance alive in the U.S. Pay no attention to the millionaires behind the curtains (who definitely send THEIR children to college and/or buy them their degrees.)
Definition of the Dumbdown of America--or the new DOA party.
Was there NO thinking person in that room? None? What town was this filmed in?
Wilka
Peter, excellent article. Bring on more, please.
Keep writing.

I think the camera man may have been...
A reasonable question, Bryan. I suspect Glen Beck was too busy kissing a**.
So do I, Janna.
It is hard to believe that these angry fanatics are so clueless.
Precisely, Kent Clark.
Look at the mental midgets - Beck, Bachman, Limpball, Jindal, Steele, Malkin, who continue to make utter fools of themselves.
The GOP is reduced to having the loathed hypocritical Newt hailed as "saviour" of the party.
I love it, almost as much as watching Dick Cheney absolutely lose it in public whenever the cowardly media finally gets around to asking him about how 9-11 happened on the Bush watch.
Man I sure destroyed my party.
GW Bush
Apparently not, Wilka, which is no surprise.
The GOP has been the avowed enemy of reason and reality for the past eight years.
]
The guy was promoting HIS marketing business, but it is amazing to see how many fools in the GOP believe that their losing positions can be made acceptable by "marketing".
Yes, yes, please let the GOP be driven by anti-flouride, anti-college, book-burning kooks for the next ten years.
Glad to see that your politics are still inspired by a shlocky cold-war fictional movie, Charles.
I think that really illustrates the mindset of these highly dangerous, unhinged people. They truly do think violence is the answer, now that they're out of political power, and appear destined to remain firmly there for decades.
With guns.
With guns. "
Damn, you're good.
It is Sarah Palin's "natural" base, Wil.
.Indeed they do, even after selling truckloads of assault weapons to drug cartels in Mexico.
This nation will reap a bitter harvest from its capitulation to the propaganda of the NRA.
That would be the folks who think anything other than The Bible, Shooting Illustrated, and anything by Ann Coulter is a "brainwashing book", right?
That about covers it, Wil.
The only other constituency, in Alaska and Texas, that finds Palin attractive would be the "true patriots" who want to secede from the USA.
I don't think that anyone believes the Tea Parties are "non-partisan".
I am not surprised, Mary Louise.
From the hype on Faux News, one would have expected something quite different than the modest number of angry crazies who did take part in these "spontaneous" outbursts.
No other person believes that they are "non-partisan", either.
And I read Gather articles that claimed Bristol Palin was a model for young people.
This is true, Brian, and the Republican party now embraces crackpots of every kind.
