The New Friendly IR_, Daylight Savings, and Form 1040 (Humor)

April 13, 2009 12:15 AM EDT

You may read this column only if you promise to shred and burn it immediately afterward — and then completely destroy it. I do not want my name falling into the hands of a certain government agency with the three-letter abbreviation (I_S) that I’d rather not spell out in case they google themselves, find this column, and misunderstand what I am about to say. Feds have the sense of humor of a bobcat.

It's tax time. An annual event in the United States when seemingly sane people waste multiple evenings and at least one complete weekend in an unnatural activity. It's a time when normally quiet people swear at their spouses and devoted fans miss prime time TV for a reality program of their own making — piecing together a financial jigsaw puzzle from bits of paper carefully stored in several shoe boxes,  the American filing system of choice.

A few years ago I got all excited when Congress passed the Tax Relief Act of 2003. That was before I read it. Two examples:

1) Lower marginal tax rate it turns out meant a cut in the top four tax brackets. This was relief, for 23 people.

2) Increase in the Child Tax Credit encouraged people to have more children, who will eventually end up in Medicare and Social Security. I propose population relief as an alternative. Under this plan the government will pay me 30% of what it costs them to care for a new citizen for every child I elect not to have. If this bill passes, I elect not to have 43 children. The children I did elect to have can find me retired in Palm Beach.

The IR_ is still smarting from a round of embarrassing congressional hearings a few years back. Admissions of hounding taxpayers, and rumors of miscreant taxpayers being detained in Guantanamo Bay, didn’t do much for their image. But, hey, I’m sure they’re all nice guys at heart. It is not true that one of their own left the I_S to produce Fear Factor.

What do I do? I pay my taxes in October after filing extensions explaining how I sprained my check-writing finger. April 15th is a bad date to file. Spring has just started and Daylight Savings Time seems to have a deleterious effect on my math ability.

April 15th is also 9 days after my birthday. I find it very depressing to think What shall I do with my next year of life? and be forced to list the first item as "File Taxes".

October is a more civilized time, six months further away from the tax year in question, which adds weight to my "I don't remember" argument. And, in April, because everyone is working on his/her taxes, the movies lines are minuscule.

Check with your own tax consultant about the details of delayed filing. All I know is I have filed late for the past 10 years and have never been contacted by the I_S. My accountant thinks moving from state to state every three months explains why I haven’t heard from them. I think it's because I cross my sevens, which confuses the optical scanning machines and forces some lowly clerk to enter my return manually when he really wants to be watching the World Series.

WARNING: Once you start fall filing you’re pretty much committed. This year I would rather file earlier but, having filed in October for a decade, I know getting my return in on time would turn the _RS Computer Room into a reasonable facsimile of an air raid in progress.

“What’s all the noise and fuss?”

“John Philipp filed on time!”

“You know what that means?”

“Heh, heh, heh.”

“Let’s get our best team on this one. Call in Snake & Epstein”.

You want to avoid an audit at all costs. An audit is (in the words of Jerry Seinfeld) “the financial equivalent of a full rectal exam.”  Some elementary addition errors on your return doesn't hurt either. Essentially you want to project a profile such that no IR_ inspector would choose to sit in the same room with you much less conduct your audit.

Another area of savings is to deduct expenses for your pet, say a dog named Fluffy. If challenged, claim you use him to keep robbers away from your business records.

EXAMINER: A toy poodle?

ME: Yeah, but he sleeps in front of a magnifying mirror. He looks huge from outside. And I pay him.

EXAMINER (taking the bait): Then where’s the dog’s tax return.

ME: He didn’t make over $600.

EXAMINER: I see you never filed Form 124638, the  “Prove You Didn’t Lie” form.

ME: I filled it out.

EXAMINER: Then where is it?

ME: Fluffy ate it.

EXAMINER: AHA! There's nothing in the regulations about dogs eating forms as an excuse for incomplete filing.

ME: He’s not a dog, he’s an employee.

At which point the Examiner begins his nervous breakdown.

Remember, it’s okay to be creative with deductions. It’s not reporting income that gives the _RS a wedgie. One motivated taxpayer deducted his son’s clarinet lessons because the dentist said it would help correct tooth defects. A true story, upheld by the tax court.

One last pointer, sign your tax return in crayon, so they know who they're dealing with. As for me, it’s April and I’m off to the movies.

SNAKE! Not Snake & Epstein! They're ruthless.

"Form 124638, the “Prove You Didn’t Lie” form -- LOL, John, don't give them any ideas.

Okay, I read it, metaphorically shredded it, and imaginarily burned it, but I really don't want to destroy my PC so is it okay if I just clear my temporary Internet files and we pretend I was never here?

Sounds fine. Okay, this made me laugh. In fact I laughed a lot.

Last year by the time my husband finished our tax returns, I owed $1600. I immediately wrote a cheque and sent it off with the returns on March 12, 2008.
I thought no more about it until I received a snippy letter telling me I owed them $1600 plus compound interest. After several days of trying to reach a human type person, I begged to know why I was being charged compound interest especially since I'd sent my cheque march 12. They had no knowledge of my payment. In May I received another demand from the Revenue office, which included compound interest on the compound interest. I was then advised to go ahead and pay it, accept that our government had robbed me, a model citizen. I sent out the cheque which amounted to over $2000 by now and continued to sulk.
Finally in July I received another missile from the Tax Department, returning my post-dated cheque. I confess my language became more and more colorful. It seems on the month-day-year spot on my cheque, I had written 03122008 as opposed 12032008. In other words I'd accidentally dated my original $1600 cheque December 3, 2008 as opposed to March 12, 2008.
I wonder how many gleeful weasels in the revenue office nailed the unsuspecting Canadian public with this ruse. Only in Canada, eh?
May the fleas of a thousand camels infest their armpits.

"Is there a penalty if you file for an extension?"

No, Jim but there are some formulas about how much you have to have paid in by 4/15.

As for those details, talk to your people.

The wonderful part about filing for an extension to file is that if you owe instead of getting a refund you will be charged interest and possibly the penalty levy on any amount you haven't paid by tax day. Flip that around and they don't owe you interest or penalty if you get a refund and have an extension to file. Have a relative I've gone around and around with that it isn't an extension to pay and of course they complain because they owe penalties.

Thanks for the tip - I just hired the neighbor's cat to ward off racoons and hippos. I will write off its salary, living expenses and deduct the expense for the self-closing cat door. I will also have to paint the house and replace the furniture to comply with OSHA regulations and since the neighbor lives in Africa I will need travel expenses. So far the IR_ owes me money, but to be safe, I will send the federal return to the state and vice versa, this always buys several weeks of extension with no cost or penalty since they actually think this was an unintensional oversight by a stupid taxpayer.

Rest easy

Unfortunately, you can extend the time to file but you can't extend the time to pay if you owe money. Since I am going to owe money, I won't file until the last possible minute. If I was getting money back, I would have filed months ago.

Funny, and and are you sure we can do this, John? I_S can be pretty unrelenting if they come after you. My mother knew. It took someone who used to work there to clear up the mess. There is a Tea Party in Dayton, OH. I hear tell there are others and they take place on April 15th.

I elect not to have 102.6 children, which is how many children I COULD have every 9 months (if you could have children every 9 months) until I turn 102 and die, which is the average lifespan of the women in my family.

I'll see you in Palm Beach. I'll be the one with the bigger yacht.

There are apparently a lot of Tea Party's scheduled by the conservative element, Yvonne.

I know you can do extensions because I always do it. There are some rules about paying estimated taxes though, so talk to someone who knows (that would not be me.)

Sigh, I wasn't one of the 23 people either and although I'm allowed some leeway with my dogs (don't need a magnifying glass for them btw) I can't claim them as employees, lol!

Thanks for the chuckle. :-)

Thanks, Ellie. Just trying to mix a little comedy with the pathos of tax time.

Jane, a lot of people feel that's what's happening here with the bailouts.

Your post made my day and some of the comments are a close second. How do you manage the time to comment on so many comments? A rhetorical question at best. My taxes were finished in February so I'm off to wash windows. That is more pleasant by far than doing taxes.

Ruth, I feel if people take the time to comment on my work, they deserve a comment back. Besides, a lot of the humor is in these comments and a lot of the wisdom is in the Thought~Byte comments. Wouldn't want to miss out on either of those.

Everything is more pleasant than doing taxes. I would have done mine in February except I had to go to Mexico and write on the beach. (Who's afraid of the IRS? — Pondering in Los Cabos (Humor))

I'm not of the conservative element. I'm of the practical element. Thanks for the head's up. I found out about the tea parties' leaning, too. But, doing taxes is a bear. I didn't have to this year, being unemployed. Still, thanks for the humor, John. (:oD

You're welcome, Yvonne.

I don't think we mind paying reasonable taxes for the services a government provides. Couldn't we just have a form that says "You earned $50,000. Send us a check for $X ?
