My 20-month old has been telling us for a while now whenever he goes to the bathroom (he'll pat his diaper and exclaim "PEE!"). I sat him on the toilet once, and he seemed really scared. I got a great little potty at a garage sale last weekend, and we put it in our bathroom for him to get used to. He'll tell us "pee" and drag us to the bathroom, but mostly he just likes to sit there naked and kick his feet. I am in no hurry to rush him through potty training, so I just take him in there whenever he says he needs to go, assuming that eventually he'll go--if only by accident--and then we'll fuss appropriately. However, some days he wants to be on the potty all day! He'll cry when I pry him off of it. My husband has no interest in sitting in the bathroom for 30 minutes on the off chance Sam might actually go. Have you potty trained boys? Any wise words of wisdom?

We were housesitting this winter, so I figured with the new room and other adjustments, I didn't want to push potty training. We're back home now, so we're going to start again soon...and I think this summer we're going cold turkey on diapers while we're in the house. My babysitter said that always worked for her...so it's worth a shot.
Also, take him with you when you go to the bathroom. Tell him what you are doing and maybe even buy a potty book so that you can read it to him while you go. We have one that flushes when you push a button.
If you don't mind the clean-up you could put him in underwear, especially when it gets hot. He won't like the feeling and it might help him to go. Another route would be cloth diapers because they don't have the absorption ability of regular ones, but it will be easier to clean up than underwear.
My daughter hated the little potties and just threw her trash and food she didn't want into it. I got a step stool and one of those potty seats that goes on top of the toilet so they don't fall in and she loved it!
You can do this!
