I was watching a news program in the past couple of days that talked about the dangers of identity theft on social network sites. They warned of people putting their pictures on the sites and their birth dates and other personal information that tempts these monstrous thieves to fix themselves up like you and give your information as if they are you.
I know that right after I saw the piece on TV, I immediately hid my birth year. They suggested that you not put your birth year /age or your photo on your profile or on the social network site.
The thing is, we've all been guilty of doing some of this because we get so familiar with each other and feel a bit like an extended family and it's sad that we have to be so careful because of a few bad apples. I would like to suggest that anyone who has their photo on here, please replace it with something that isn't going to give these thieves an entrance to hurt you.
I'd also suggest that from now on, you hide your birth year and any information to your age. And, please don't give out any details on the site to where you live or any financial information. One lady in this piece said that someone had managed to access her profile and went on the network site as her and told all of her friends that she was in a serious jam and needed money and asked them to send it to a particular place.
She found out about it and changed her password and let her friends know that it wasn't her. I'm not sure if any of her friends sent money or not but this is really scary.
I guess I always wonder why someone intelligent and clever enough to come up with these heartless scams doesn't do something productive and positive. They obviously have a talent that could do a lot of good for people and with a little hard work, they could probably make a fortune doing something honest.
I guess the problem is that they don't want to work. But figuring out how to do all of these scams takes just as much energy as it does to do something productive and positive. Why not do something that will make them a hero and make them look good instead of being a criminal? All they have to do is choose to do something positive with their lives.
In the interim, please be careful! I don't want anything to happen to any of us on here. I like you guys and I so enjoy your friendship.

If you don't mind, I would like to post a "Featured Question" below that I published a few months ago that is very applicable to your article...
Gather's Privacy Policy prohibits them from releasing any personally identifiable information about you to other members. This would include your address.
However, it is fairly easy to determine the person responsible for releasing your address to other members. That person is likely to be...you, although you may not realize it.
Each time you publish content, update your profile, or comment in the community you can potentially reveal information about yourself and your family. This information may be relatively insignificant and meaningless on its own, but collectively can lead to a serious compromise of your privacy and personal safety.
To illustrate, although you do not use your real name on Gather or share photos of your children, I was able to acquire both within less than 20 minutes following a brief review of your content. In addition to these items, I was able to obtain your:
Plus, the name and address of the school your children attend, the location of the park your children often visit, the name of your best friend, your family names, photos of your house and where you do your shopping, among other personal information which could potentially be used by someone with ill intent towards you or your family.
While you did not directly share the majority of the information above, using simple searches on the internet allows a greater amount of data to be identified which can then be used to extract more information, via the internet or by telephone.
Once your real name was determined, it was then a simple process to locate your children's school and obtain photos of them, even though you have never shared these on Gather. Other information was obtained in a similar manner using your posts and profile.
Hence you have made it far too easy for others to locate information about you, even through the sharing of the most innocuous content or other postings.
To protect yourself and your family, I recommend:
Thank you for thinking of us.
