Someone dug up an old post of mine, just to say rude things about me. I honestly don't see the point in coming on here just to be rude. I know people do it for points but why do they have to insult others? People on here clearly post content that is inportant to them and I try not to insult the content of others. I've been registered with gather for a long time but have only been using it for a few weeks. During those two weeks an article I wrote about my late father got rated a one by a gather troll and then this, well I don't know if it's a woman or a man but it harrassed me. I still plan to use gather, not only for the points but because I like to have converstations. Just please, gather trolls, think about what you do before you do it. People post things on jhere that are important to them(mostly).

I guess I've been lucky. I've been here a couple of months and haven't had a problem like this, but so many people seem to be having them.

I see post like mine on a daily basis. I hate the trolls and I hate people who think they have to be rude to you because they don't share the same views as you do. Can't you just say what you want without insulting others?

I think it is a combination of things. When someone writes something that is obviously personal such as you did about your father people should either give it a ten or just simply not give it a rating because I think the goal of a writer in posting such things are to gain support, not necessarily sharpen your writing skill. On the other hand, I do think there are a lot of people on this site that need to develop tougher skins. Not everything we post is going to be perfection. I see a lot more point inflation than I do the work of the so-called trolls. I suppose one of the things that gripes me is that having within the last year in a half dealt with cancer and chemo that I have complained for less about those circumstances than many folks complain about their ratings.

Honestly, when I read something or look at something I give it an honest rating and would not be posting this if I didn't think whoever did this to me did it just to lower my rating.

I am truly sorry about the passing of your father. I have never understood some people's need to hurt others here on Gather.

If I read a post that I think is mean spirited or I don't agree with it, I just don't comment or rate and move on. My introduction to Gather involved people low rating pictures of my kids and pet. I was like what? Don't let them get you down, and madame has a great suggestion, turn of the ratings. The ones who low rate, never comment anyway.

Phoenix, madame missu gave you the best advice: turn the ratings off when you post. That way you don't have to deal with trolls and points you earn have nothing to do with ratings. Trust me, you'll be happier if you turn them off.

Well, the point of ratings is supposed to be to show people how good you think their work is. I would turn the ratings off but what's the point of punishing yourself for other people who are too childish to be here?
Ratings are worthless.

Phoenix the thing with ratings is this.

Some people do rate a 1 or 2 or whatever to be mean but others take ratings seriously and they will rate you on the content, creativity or whatever they judge by.

Just because you post an article doesnt mean that it is Pulitzer Prize material and automatically deserves a 10 and a standing ovation.

Plus gather gives you the option to turn off ratings if getting less than perfect bothers you.

You're right, Phoenix, that is how they are supposed to be used. But the reality is that they are seldom used appropriately; most things do not warrant a 10 and few things warrant a 1, but those are the two numbers most often used.

You said you felt insulted by the low rating, so the only way to avoid those are to turn your ratings off. Trolls will not stop because you ask them to do so.

It's your choice- it's just a suggestion.

Plus from my experience here the name calling goes both ways.

I am not refering to this article but this is what usually happens.

Someone gets less than a perfect 10 on an article and then shares a rant titled:

I LOATHE YOU BIG FAT GATHER TROLL LOW RATERS AND I HOPE YOU ALL BURN IN HELL CAUSE YOU ARE TOO STUPID TO LIVE.

Then the body of the article goes on to explain how upset someone is by being low rated or name called.

The person rating my stuff low wasn't the only thing that bothered me, the personal attacks they left under my articles, which are gone now.

And the issue about mean comments and ratings...you dont know who is rating and what rating they give unless they tell you.

I hardly ever rate anything just because I either forget or its not a big deal to me.

So you dont know if the person saying something snarky is actually rating you low or not.

Just give them snark right back.

I have had people do that to me too. Delete their comments.

Just dont let it get to you...some people love that kind of stuff. If they know it is bothering you they continue if they dont get a reaction out of you they move on.

And remember you can always copy and paste their comment on your article plus with the new group update even if they delete a comment if you go to one of the groups your article is posted to their comment will still show in the feed...so comments are never really gone...gone.

Thank you for this post! now that I've read it, I feel less badly about some of the personal attacks on the site from total strangers. I left the site for 2 years. and I'm gong to try again. I hope more people on the site today are like YOU!
