This will be the last essay about my vacation trip to Arizona, but I will still be posting odds and ends of shots I took while there. There is just too many to just keep the essay going, so I will just do them when I have a chance to post them one at a time.
On the weekend with my brother we went to this huge flea market in Mesa that we only got half way through on Saturday! It was just too big to do all at once.
Then on Sunday we went to Casa Grande Ruins. This was once the home of the Hohokam People. A people who lived there for 1000's of years then disappeared in the 1400's. If you ever get to AZ this is one place you won't want to miss!

It was named Casa Grande by the early Spanish, which means "Great House"

The Great House has always been a mystery as it walls faced the 4 cardinal points of the compass and has a circular hole in the upper west wall and aligns with the setting sun during the summer solstice. Other opening align with the sun and the moon at specific.times. The canopy was placed over it in 1932 to help preserve it from the elements.
The mountain peak you see in the background is the same mountain peak you saw in my shots of my brothers backyard! It's just the other side of the mountain from his side!

The small dwelling are called pithouses and platform mounds with the smooth flat topped structures.

My brother and sister in law investigating the ruins.

Casa Grande's only occupants now days. We though they were praire dogs, but the sign said they were ground squirrels and smaller the praire dogs. Friendly little guys! Would almost let you come up to them then zip down a hole they'd go! lol
