PICK-UP STICKS
©Robert Burnham, 2009
Growing up an Oldie
Wishing he was a roadie
Rolling up a toadie
On some Jamaican beach
Dreaming on a heaven
Relying on a seven
From the time he was eleven
With Vegas out of reach
Once listenin to Alice Cooper
David Bowie in the pooper
In a psychedelic stupor
We knew he'd end up dead
Not many would mourn him
Only those who torn him
And that One who did scorn him
And maybe one fictitious Fred
Hula Hoop and Flutophone
A Banana Boat tan tone
Abbott & Costello kodachromes
Is this all that he'll miss
Dinosaurs and Ghost Rider
Grand Canyon looks wider
Once kissed by Wynona Ryder
He's just falling through the mist
Many girls left behind
Lost souls still to find
Has he totally lost his mind
Swimming the River Styx
Blackness it does devour
All of one's wanton hours
Hell, maybe it's just a shower
Or a game of Pick-up sticks......

The message is poignant and thought provoking.
I particularly like the rhyme scheme. Definitely has a song quality.
Thanks.

Thanks everyone for coming along, appreciate your time in commenting. John, from my humor mentor, wow. Thanks.
It seems cheeky and somewhat irreverent, but then it amounts to a touching tribute to a lost soul.
It takes a fair bit of facility and a good dollop of talent to pull of something like this. I think you have depths even yet unplumbed.
But even more, though I haven't a poetic bone or typing-finger in my body, can't "do" poetry myself, and may be reading it wrong ... this speaks to me not only of your 'muse', your proficiency, and your depths (good, bad, sad, joyful, despondent as well as responsive); I see hope here. Hope. It's a good thing.
Jen says you have more to do yet.
I agree.
I always love your poetry, but this one is especially good - maybe because it brought back a lot of memories - a child of the 60s here!
Good poem, Robert.
When I get the chance, I will email you.

I kind of had to imagine the Jamaican beach for a beach in Maine but the rest pretty much runs true. Thanks Dawn for coming along.
