Marcus Licinius Crassus, Roman General, born around 112 BC.
Crassus joined Lucius Cornelius Sulla's army in 83 BC and contributed greatly to a number of Sulla's victories, especially the Battle of the Colline Gate in 82 BC.
By purchasing the property of persons proscribed (those that have been condemned to death with the property of the condemned forfeited to the state) by Sulla, Crassus amassed an enormous fortune (based on information from Forbes he'd be worth $169.8 billion in todays economy), which he used lavishly in pursuing power. Later, by speculation in real estate and participation in the equestrian corporations, he rivaled Pompey in his wealth.
When Spartacus led a revolt of the slaves in 73 BC, Crassus was sent against him, defeating him in 71 BC.
In 70 BC he was consul with Pompey.
For years he opposed Pompey, but in 60 BC he was reconciled to him by Caesar, and the three formed the First Triumvirate.
After its renewal in 56 BC, Crassus again shared the consulship with Pompey in 55 BC, and the next year he became administrator of Syria.
In 53 BC he undertook a campaign against the Parthians in Mesopotamia, where he was disastrously defeated and murdered at Carrhae, Mesopotamia (now Haran, Turkey).
