Yes, but is it evil?
First, a definition of plagiarism in my own words, but even though these are my own words, I have learned this over the years, so when is it plagiarism and when does it become my own?
It's the theft of someone else work or idea without acknowledging you got the work or idea from someone else. (My thoughts)
Now, here's my problem, if I cut and paste an image or an article and don't cite the source, that's clearly plagiarism, but what if I hear a news article on the radio and repeat it? Is that plagiarism. I'm an English teacher, and I struggle with this. How is someone who is not trained in citing works to know what is and isn't plagiarism?
I have seen some very nice articles on Gather on this subject, but I've also seen some vicious attacks. I've learned a lot from both but I don't see that being vicious or unclear is very helpful.
Here is a link I found, and there are many others, that may help you with this question. I hope you find it helpful and nice.

: to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own : use (another's production) without crediting the source
intransitive verb
: to commit literary theft : present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source
Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
On the passing of a story, you'd be smart to say for example:
I heard on KPXI today that blah blah blah blah
How long have you been teaching English?
How many of us, when discussing the news, ever refer to something verbatum? Not often, unless you have a photographic memory.
I can certainly understand how someone feels if something of theirs is stolen or ripped off. Still and all, there are proper and polite ways to confront a person without having to become vicious about it.
Thanks for posting this.
Yes.
"Intent" is not really a factor concerning guilt. It has more weight in sentencing.
It would be very difficult to plagiarize a news story you heard on the radio, unless you transcribed a significant portion of the material.
Look at all the controversy that was caused by the icon waving piggy this week? C'mon I went on the net and found 2 sources of it that was free, I sent a message to PhotoBucket and finally Kevin the SightWizard weighed his 2 cents in on the subject.
Good thoughts
Good Article.

If I am repeating hearsay (like what I hear on TV as the evening news) that is not plagiarism. But when I use someone else's writing I always try to not only use quotes but also indicate clearly who wrote that material.
It is wise to avoid even the appearance of possible plagiarism.
If you cite the source, it is not really plagiarism...but it may still violate copyright law.
I find that it is copyright law and "fair use" that most members struggle with and that make up the majority of problems in the community.
FYI, you cannot publish the image of someone else, even if you do cite the source. There are some cases where you can, but again this is an area that many members are unfamiliar with.
If it's an opinion piece, I would say something like "Although XYZ news reported....I believe that...."
If I saw someone take something of mine that has been published, they would find themselves in court quickly. I work too hard for someone to steal it and say it is theirs, or does ask my permission to use it. (which I would say no to anyway)
I get ten royality checks each quarter, that is my income for my work...not yours.
Understand now?
You are an idiot. You assume I heard it once. I do not call names, but thanks, in your case, I'll make an exception. You are insulting and without wit.
Your dry humor missed its mark, and if this were my discussion you would be automatically put on my immediately ban without reading list, and your comments would have been deleted.
Not because of what you think, because you have NO CLASS, just like 20 other people that I delete upon sight of avatar.

If you tell me an idea you developed and I then attempt to take credit for having been first to present that idea I would call that plagiarism but if I just use that idea I don't think it is. My goodness, we all hear of ideas every day and they all get jumbled up in our minds. Who can say where each idea came from? I certainly cannot. I also know that I have gotten ideas in the past and later discovered that somebody (perhaps thousands of years before) had already gotten that idea. So the idea is mine in one sense but isn't in another sense.
But, copying and pasting an article directly is plagerism and using a photo or video without citing a source is plagerism also.
I am way behind so sorry for the generic comment but I wanted you to know that I was here.
Have a GREAT Day!
