Yesterday afternoon in La Canada Flintridge, CA, a big rig lost control of his truck coming off of the highway on a steep incline and plowed into five cars and then into a bookstore/coffee shop killing two people. The city had been trying for a long time to get CalTrans (the road work people) to re-post some signs for truckers that the center median is a runaway truck stop because there had already been several other accidents at this same intersection and up until yesterday no one had been killed.
The citizens of the city from the Mayor on down had been complaining because they knew this was a disaster waiting to happen but Cal Trans officials refused to listen. Now, two have died and another 12 have been injured and they have put the poor trucker in jail for manslaughter. That is completely outrageous! The ones who should be in jail for this are the Cal Trans officials who would post the signs that could have prevented this altogether.
I don't think the trucker should be held responsible if he lost control of a truck that may have had brake problems. Yes, every driver is responsible to make sure their vehicle is in good condition but sometimes it's simply out of a human being's control and this poor guy is going to have to live with this the rest of his life as it is. I think that's punishment enough!
It's not like the guy intentionally had the accident or killed and maimed those people. I just don't think it's right that he should be in jail over this. As I said, if anyone should be in jail for it, it's the Cal Trans officials who wouldn't do anything about the situation before this happened.
So, what do you think?
