The New York and American stock exchanges serve similar functions, but to vastly different sized companies. Generally, the American Exchange offers a sales outlet for smaller, less established companies' stoks; the New York Exchange serves the country's biggest companies.

Currently, the three major stock exchanges are:
American Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, and New York Stock Exchange.
Three major indeces are Dow 30 Industrial, NASDAQ index, and S&P 500 index. S&P 500 most closely matches the domestic stocks.
