It is sometimes advantageous to have knowledge of certain "shortcuts" to make our life on Gather more enjoyable. The ease of publishing and writing comments can be helped by having some of these simple tools and tricks at your finger tips. I have learned about using a few HTML entities from Kevin, the Wizard of Gather, and from a few other helpful Gather members. Since then, I've learned about the ease of obtaining ALT characters through simple codes.
To obtain an ALT Character:
- Activate the numeric key section of your keyboard by making sure your NUM LOCK key is depressed and lit.
- Depress the ALT key.
- Pick the ALT code you need from the tables below, and while the ALT key is depressed, type the proper sequence of numbers on the numeric keypad.
- Example: to obtain ☺, press ALT 1.
- Release the ALT key; the character you need should appear.

*Note that some browsers do not recognize all ALT Characters. Each of the characters in the table above is virtually unique so, if you see multiple cells of the same character, or some blank spaces and hollow boxes, it usually indicates that your browser may not recognize the codes for some of those characters. Your browser most likely does not know what those should look like, and it just inserts its own character when it displays it on your computer.

I use these symbols regularly, although I prefer to use the HTML entity name. This allows me to copy and paste the comment without difficulty.
By the way, 'eggs' were posted randomly throughout the community on recent content. I was only able to cover a small fraction of the community...so I'm sorry that you didn't get one this time.
I'll be doing another one in May though!
I told you, I'd get the hang of making tables sooner or later... :-) but it sure was a pain trying to make the fonts/ characters readable. I had to manually manipulate each character inside the table to enlarge them to the largest size possible so they can be more visible!
I understood about the eggs... I wasn't pouting or anything. LOL. If they only went to your connections or to your list I was not worried. The eggs just sort of poked my interest when Mariana's comment sailed into Comments For Me because she didn't know how to 'crack her egg'...it made me wonder what was going on and I came to check.
Sounds like the May games would be another fun time.

Grems, you need to do the two action simultaneously. Put the codes in while pressing the ALT key, then release the ALT key and the character you want will appear.

I'm using a MacBook Pro and Safari. The above characters were produced by using " fn F6" to turn on "num lock", then typing 1 through 9 on the keypad. No smiley face, though.
