Greece is located in the south-east of Europe, close to the Mediterranean; its surface is of 131.944 km ².
In north, the continental area is composed of high mountains, fertile plains, covered plates of forests of pines and rocky buttresses, covered of maquis.
The Greek islands represent a fifth of the entire surface of the country.
The majority of these islands are in the Aegean Sea, between the coasts of Greece and Turkey.
The Ioniennes islands are an exception: they are located along the Western coast of the sea Ionienne.
