Ancient Greece was an area of state-cities, separate, autonomous and often in war the ones with the others. Athens was traditionally the center of the culture, arts, sciences, the policy and the development, while Sparte was the city which could perfect the art of the war, and whose soldiers were feared and respected in all Mediterranean. Great names such as Socrate, Plato, Aristote, Euripide and Sophocle made of Athens their fatherland, while one of the largest heroes of Sparte was Léonidas which repressed, with only three hundred men, the very powerful army of the Persian empire of Xerxès, in the procession of Thermopyles, thus making it possible Greece to gain invaluable days to organize its troops and to resist the invasion which followed.
The Athenian company of the time appears well not very attractive to us today. Only the men had substantial rights. The women, the children and the slaves all were excluded from the responsibilities for the capacity. Although it was the company more progressist of the known world and the fatherland of the democracy, Athens still lived with these inequalities strongly anchored in mentalities.
The life of the city turned around the place of the market, or agora, meeting place where all the commune was found to chatter, make of the policy, the purchases or quite simply to stroll. The ruins of much of these agoras are still visible today. One of most remarkable is the immense agora of Athens.
