Welcome to the HelpCenter™!

The original Gather help series -- assisting members since 2006.
Need a little help, or have a question?
Can't find something? ...or figure out how something works?
Ask other members!

"I am not really comfortable having my marital status or sexual orientation displayed on my profile, even if I can restrict it to 'just me' (you never know who may be looking over your shoulder). Is there a way to turn this off completely?"Yes there is! All selection boxes on your profile that are currently blank will not appear when your profile is viewed. This is the default for all profile data. However, if you have already chosen an option from one of the drop-down boxes, you can easily reset that element back to this default. This will 'turn off' that piece of information and it will not appear in your profile for you or anyone else.
Each drop-down box has a blank, or empty space, as one of the available options. This blank appears at the top of the selection list, and will initially appear as a grey bar as illustrated below:
Clicking this space from any drop-down box will effectively turn off this profile element. If you change your mind later on, you may turn on this profile data at any time by choosing any other option from within the drop-down box.
The new print feature formats the daily tip into a printable quick reference.
As this is a new option, please let me know of any problems or recommendations.
Thank you.
Yes, I did read that last night, but haven't had an opportunity yet to respond.
Great news! ...that came fairly quickly too.
I can see the future photo essay title now... Kevin Bought Me Flowers ha ha ha!

(ha ha)
Any other suggestions?
Unfortunately this is a known glitch that Gather is currently working on. They hope to have it resolved as soon as possible, but at this time there is no estimate on when it will be resolved and there is no work-around.
You should be able to create a NEW album however and move your photos into that album without difficulty.
If it's any consolation, this is affecting many members.
(ans she goes to find a binder and set up a table of contents...)
I've finished the categorized index, and the daily tips will be included. I hope to have that published soon...so don't spend too much time on that table of contents!

Is there an easy way to search your articles for answers to questions we have that might have already been answered? I guess I'm asking if you have a guide I can consult that will tell me what date the question and solution appeared so I don't bug you for common problems, all over again?
Please feel free to bug me anytime!
I do have a categorized index (with links) which I took offline for a time to update it for the recent upgrade. I'll be re-releasing and discussing it this coming week...along with all of my "Mastering Gather" tutorials. Each of these will also have printable quick reference cards/sheets.
So...look for more on this very soon.
I'm trying to write an article, a tutorial for some friends, and I need to use a table to help illustrate part of it... do you think I could make one without messing it up horribly?! think you showed us how to make them once, didn't you? Or am I just thinking of call-out boxes?
If you have Word, create the basic table in Word and then copy into the Gather post editor.
..or, let me know how many columns and rows you need, and I can post the code for you below in a few minutes.
You can make ONE table with multiple cells. However, I would need to know how many rows and columns you need in order to create it for you. You can then add rows, if needed by manipulating the HTML. Otherwise, use Word to do it all for you.
Have you considered a long table with multiple rows instead of posting several tables?
If you can show me the text of what you are trying to create, I can offer a better suggestion.
Thank You!
I have to run, but I'll be happy to help you further when I return.
If you like, send me a sample of what you want to create to: gatherpro@gmail.com
How do you create a clickable link in comments. I just created a group and want to leave a message on accepted content. Something like "Thanks for sharing with (link)I love getting free stuff!(link). The group name would be the clickable part.
Also, does it work the same when referencing a different website for a source when answering someone's question.
Do I get some catnip if I tell you that you forgot to spotlight this today? It made you a little tougher to track down.... ;o)
Kari — I'll provide instructions and information below.
Thanks for letting me know. I made some adjustments in my publishing process today and evidently that part isn't working as intended.
All fixed!
Everyone has their own method for creating links, and each has it's advantages and disadvantages. For example, you can even use a free add-on for your browser that will create links for you in pings, comments and mail messages. However, most members learn the code required or just copy a link and modify it.
To illustrate:
Here is a link to THIS post:
my post
It would be typed in a comment or mail message like this:
<a rel="nofollow" href="viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977638779">my post</a>
or this:
<a rel="nofollow" href="http://gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977638779">my post</a>
You might want to copy the code above and keep it somewhere. Then, when you need it, change the URL (web address) which is the part that appears between the quotation marks. This should be changed to the URL for the content or group you want to direct members to. You can also change the words that someone clicks on, if desired.
if you need any help or have problems, please let me know.
NOTE: You can publish a post to "Just Me" and then practice in the comment section, if needed. Since no one but you can see the post, the test comments remain private too.
You can also use the code to direct members to another website, like Yahoo, Google, etc.
For example, here is the basic HTML link code:
<a href=""></a>
To use this code to direct members to Yahoo, you would modify it to reflect the following:
<a href="http://yahoo.com">Go to Yahoo!</a>
It will appear in your comment like this:
Go to Yahoo!
You mentioned that you would be posting about background colors/images on 3/23. I can't find anything about this. Did I miss it somewhere? Thanks.
I did publish information on adding background colors to posts, but have yet to publish information on background images. I decided to hold off until Easter was a bit closer as I will focus the "Featured Question" on holiday-related backgrounds.
I think tomorrow might be a good day...so look for it then.
If you have any questions in the interim, please let me know.
