Ring Around the Sun

As I sat enjoying the sunshine at the pond this morning. I looked up and noticed the sun had a ring around it. It was almost like a rainbow on the outer edge there was colors.

Believe me I was surprise when the photos I took turned out.

Nope -- my mistake. This is a solar halo; a sun dog is when there appears to be two suns.

Nice shots! I never have any luck when I try to capture such things. Once I tried to capture a sequence of "sunrise" shots from high on a hill above Bergen, Norway. It was December, it was cold, and it was early, but not as early as you would normally have to get up for sunrise, since the mountains to the east raised the horizon significantly.

Anyway, I took about 20 shots full of ever-increasing variations on color as the sun crept over the mountain, using up most of my roll of film. (This was 30 years ago.) Back in the U.S. a few weeks later I developed my film and discovered a bunch of shots that looked like "gray variations" on the shadow-side of a mountain. Thus ended my potential career as an artistic photographer.

Good ones. Those are generally caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere.
